Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm
Job Summary: The Special Education Teacher provides instruction as well as an appropriate learning environment for children with special needs. Develops and implements individual instructional plans. Communicates with the student's families or guardians. Supervises other classroom staff.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Teacher Certificate issued by the Alabama State Department of Education; OR the ability to obtain a Teacher Certificate issued by the Alabama State Department of Education within six (6) months of hire.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Skills and Knowledge: Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to teach students with significant disabilities in a model transition program. Knowledge of curriculum requirements and trends in the discipline. Knowledge of student learning characteristics by area of exceptionality. Knowledge of the field of transition education and transition evidence-based practices. Ability to develop Individualized Education Programs (IEP) for students in caseload and fulfill other relevant regulatory requirements of the LEA. Ability to conduct and interpret assessment data, group students, and utilize instructional methodologies to promote the achievement of positive postschool outcomes for students. Ability to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, e.g., the University of Alabama (UA) program administrators and staff, Local Education Agency (LEA) representatives, families, related service providers, and other related agency personnel. Ability to perform required work in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment. Commitment to excellence in transition education of youth with significant disabilities.
