Project Engineer – Heavy Civil Construction

Our client is seeking a Project Engineer to support the Project Manager and Superintendent on heavy civil and public infrastructure projects throughout the Greater Houston area. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career construction professional or recent graduate looking to build a career in heavy civil project management. The Project Engineer will gain hands-on experience with project documentation, quantity and cost tracking, procurement, scheduling, field coordination, contract administration, and communication with owners, engineers, inspectors, subcontractors, and suppliers. The position provides a clear path toward increased project management responsibility and advancement to Assistant Project Manager and Project Manager.

Salary: $50K - $75K (Depending on Experience)

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
• Entry-level and recent graduate candidates will be considered.
• Internship, co-op, or prior construction experience in heavy civil, underground utilities, water/wastewater, roadway, drainage, pipeline, shaft/tunnel, or trenchless construction is a plus.
• Strong interest in developing a career in heavy civil construction project management.
• Moderate to high proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Experience with quantity takeoffs, scheduling software such as Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project, CMiC, HeavyJob, or similar systems is a plus.
• Ability to read and develop an understanding of construction plans, specifications, contracts, and related project documents.
• Strong communication, organization, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.
• Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
• Ability to work in both jobsite trailer/office and active construction-site environments, including outdoor weather conditions and light to moderate physical activity.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel between project sites throughout the Greater Houston area as required.

Responsibilities

• Support the construction of underground water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, large-diameter pipelines, lift stations, pump stations, roadway and paving improvements, shaft construction, tunneling, HDD, and other trenchless projects.
• Support the Project Manager and Superintendent with day-to-day project coordination and project management activities.
• Develop familiarity with project plans, specifications, contracts, addenda, RFIs, submittals, schedule of values, bid quantities, and owner requirements.
• Prepare, organize, and track project submittals and RFIs while maintaining accurate logs and identifying overdue or critical items.
• Maintain current project drawings, revisions, redlines, as-built information, specifications, and document-control files.
• Track installed production quantities, labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractor work using HeavyJob, CMiC, spreadsheets, or similar systems.
• Maintain and review daily reports and compare contractor records with inspector reports, installed quantities, and field conditions.
• Assist with procurement activities, including purchase orders, subcontract agreements, material releases, shop drawings, fabrication status, and delivery tracking.
• Support look-ahead planning, project schedules, material deliveries, subcontractor coordination, shutdowns, tie-ins, traffic control, and other field constraints.
• Gather and organize information used for monthly cost reports, billing, cost forecasts, schedule updates, and project management reviews.
• Document changed conditions, extra work, field directives, delays, and potential cost or schedule impacts using photographs, quantities, labor and equipment records, and supporting correspondence.
• Coordinate and maintain 811 locates, permits, lane and sidewalk closures, and other project-specific documentation as assigned.
• Communicate professionally with owners, engineers, inspectors, subcontractors, suppliers, field personnel, and internal departments.
• Participate in safety meetings and support required safety, environmental, quality control, and inspection documentation.
• Support MWDBE/DBE documentation and subcontractor/vendor payment reporting when required.
• Assist with project closeout, including punch lists, as-builts, final quantities, warranties, closeout documents, and record organization.
• Develop construction, project controls, contract administration, and project management skills with the opportunity to take on increased responsibility over time.
