Police Officer Trainee

Position Summary UNC Police Officer Trainee – a full‑time, permanent staff position (EHRA Non‑Faculty) located in North Carolina, US. The role protects and serves students, faculty, staff and visitors across the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus, conducting patrols, investigating complaints, and enforcing state and local laws. Responsibilities Patrol campus and respond to incidents in line with the Community‑Oriented Policing philosophy. Investigate complaints and violations of state laws and local ordinances. Develop and implement preventative patrol techniques. Perform specialized duties to deter crime and promote safety and security practices. Complete a 5‑6 month full‑time Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) course, pass the written exam, and achieve certification as a Law Enforcement Officer. Attend a three‑week department orientation and a twelve‑week field training program during the probationary period. Serve as an essential emergency duty employee, reporting to work during adverse weather or emergency situations. Report Clery Act crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual reporting training. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High School diploma or GED. Eligibility to attend the North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy. Pass a background investigation, psychological test, polygraph exam, drug screening, and physical assessment. Must be 20 years of age or older at time of appointment. Valid North Carolina Driver’s License. Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to interact professionally with the public and criminal justice partners. Capacity to provide leadership during emergency incidents. Compliance with all North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission requirements. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Associate’s Degree or higher from an accredited community college or university is preferred. Special Physical/Mental Requirements Meet all physical and psychological requirements set by the North Carolina Criminal Education and Standards Commission, including exam, drug test, and polygraph. Ability to subdue resisting suspects, execute forcible arrests, and operate a law‑enforcement vehicle under emergency conditions. Endurance for verbal and mental abuse, understanding of legal documents, and ability to exercise independent judgment regarding use of force. Campus Security Authority Responsibilities Designated Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act. Will report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training on reporting responsibilities.
