English Teacher - Grades 6 - 8

St. Michael’s Country Day School is an independent school in Newport, Rhode Island serving students from toddler through grade eight. We are actively seeking an experienced teacher for an opening within the Middle School in grades six through eight with a focus on English. Candidates must have a strong understanding of the academic, social, and emotional needs of middle school students and a passion for working with this age group during a critical stage of development. We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate: an ability to teach engaging and developmentally appropriate English curriculum aligned with the school’s program; an ability to guide students in close reading, literary analysis, and thoughtful discussion of texts; an ability to teach writing across multiple genres including narrative, analytical, and argumentative writing; an ability to support students in developing grammar, vocabulary, and writing mechanics; an ability to foster a classroom environment that values student voice, perspective, and respectful discourse; an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues; strong verbal and written communication skills; an understanding of, appreciation for, and commitment to twenty first century learning skills; an aptitude for and commitment to meaningful technology integration in the classroom; the ability to create engaging learning experiences that foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a love of reading and writing. Experience with reading and writing workshop models, project based learning, Responsive Advisory, differentiated instruction, and student centered instructional practices is preferred. A master’s degree and prior middle school teaching experience are also desirable. Familiarity with the science of reading and structured literacy practices is a plus.
