The Senior Clinical Psychiatrist oversees all psychiatric service operations for the assertive community treatment team including supervising a psychiatric nurse practitioner, providing direct services, and maintaining a medication room. Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) follows the SAMHSA service delivery model for treatment of adults with persistent mental illness.

The opportunity includes:

• Working in a highly collaborative supportive community based environment;
• Providing complete and detailed psychiatric evaluation and diagnostic services;
• Using the time allocated for initial psychiatric evaluations and medication management in a manner that will ensure therapeutic environment and safety;
• Providing a therapeutic environment conducive to a healthy relationship between the client and the psychiatrist;
• Reviewing client clinical records to assure adequacy and proper prescription of medications;
• Educating clients, family members or legal representatives regarding the nature and treatment of psychiatric illness, medications, and other treatment/rehabilitation techniques;
• Obtaining informed consent for medications in accordance with policies and procedures; and ensuring clients are free to ask questions regarding medication services and any treatment options;
• Providing individual medication services on a regular basis, including following standards of care, monitoring of possible side effects and referring to outside physician when indicated;
• Prescribing and delivering medication according to rules and regulations of the Boards of Medicine and Pharmacy;
• Providing oversight of ACT medication room;
• Maintaining clear and detailed correlation of all written documentation required for maintaining client clinical records. Preparing or signing reports in a timely manner, ensuring handwritten documents are legible and in accordance with safety writing procedures;
• Participating in daily team meetings;
• Ensuring harmonious working relationships with co-workers, clients and others;
• Providing crisis intervention and/or ensuring flexibility to intervene on emergency situations;
• Providing consultation services to, and developing treatment plans with clients and staff;
• Providing guidance and leadership with ACT clients;
• Administering medications in emergency situations;
• Providing psychiatric services where needed by clients including in homes, shelters, and other community locations. Hours may include some evenings, weekends, and holidays. Schedule will be decided upon hiring or as needed.
• Performing related work as required.

The Center for Adult Services (CAS) provides programs and services in Aging; Adult Protective Services; Clinical & Emergency Services; and Community & Residential Support Services for seniors and for persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders. CAS provides compassionate and effective person-centered services based on best practices. Our teams support self-determination, safety and recovery for Alexandria residents affected by abuse, neglect, mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse disorders.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as a General Psychiatrist (Diplomate), and possession of a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy Degree; three years of experience in the practice of Psychiatry at the level of Clinical Psychiatrist; satisfactory completion of a residency program in Psychiatry; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession of a current, valid license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia; possession of a license of registration with the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and be able to hold a National Provider Identifier (NPI).

Preferred Qualifications

Possess a valid driver's license; Board certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as well as Adult Psychiatry. At least three years' experience in the supervision and administration of an outpatient or inpatient clinical psychiatric service. Bilingual with English/Spanish, French, African or Middle Eastern language skills.

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment checks to include: FBI/Federal Records; Medicare/Medicaid Database; Commonwealth of Virginia child abuse registry; Education/Certifications Verification; Sheriff's Office clearance, where required, and DMV record and Valid Driver's License.

Schedule: Part-Time / 20 hours per week. Flexible schedule & hours TBD upon hire.

Salary Range: $59.33 - $115.44 per hour.
