Medical-Surgical Float Pool Registered Nurse

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and adaptable Registered Nurse for a Medical-Surgical Float Pool position in Hilo, Hawaii. This role involves floating across various acute care units, including Medical, Surgical Acute (Laulima), and occasionally Cardiovascular units, providing comprehensive nursing care to diverse patient populations.

The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic environment, demonstrating proficiency in managing a varied caseload while maintaining excellent patient outcomes. This position offers an opportunity to work within a supportive team across units with varying bed capacities (Medical: 77 beds, Laulima: 18 beds, Cardiovascular: 15 beds) and patient ratios.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care to medical and surgical patients across multiple units.
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by physicians.
• Monitor patient conditions, interpret data, and document observations accurately in Meditech EMR.
• Manage and operate medical equipment including Pyxis, wound vacs, and chest tubes.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to develop and implement individualized care plans.
• Educate patients and their families on health conditions, medications, and self-care techniques.
• Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients.
• Adhere to established nurse-to-patient ratios, which may vary by unit and shift (e.g., Medical: 1:6 days/evenings, 1:8 nights; Laulima: 1:6; Cardiovascular: 1:4).

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of recent acute care Medical-Surgical experience.
• Demonstrated proof of immunity; medical and religious exemption requests will not be accepted.
• Ability to float between various medical and surgical units as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification.
• Experience with Procedural Sedation.
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) certification.
• ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course) certification.

Skills & Competencies

• Proficiency with Meditech EMR system.
• Competent in Pyxis medication dispensing system.
• Skilled in wound vac management.
• Experience with chest tube management.
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
