Pharmacy Cashier

Position Summary

The Pharmacy Cashier is responsible for providing exceptional customer service while supporting the daily operations of the pharmacy. This position serves as the first point of contact for customers, accurately processes transactions, assists with prescription pickups, and helps maintain an organized, welcoming retail environment. The Pharmacy Cashier works closely with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and retail staff to ensure a positive customer experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Greet customers in a friendly, professional, and courteous manner.
• Process prescription and retail purchases accurately using the point-of-sale (POS) system.
• Collect payments, process insurance co-pays, issue receipts, and balance the cash drawer.
• Verify customer identification for prescription pickup in accordance with pharmacy policies.
• Assist customers with locating over-the-counter medications, personal care products, gifts, and cosmetics.
• Answer incoming telephone calls and direct inquiries to the appropriate pharmacy staff.
• Maintain customer confidentiality and comply with HIPAA privacy standards.
• Stock merchandise, replenish retail displays, and ensure shelves are clean and organized.
• Monitor inventory levels and notify management of low-stock items.
• Assist with pricing, labeling, merchandising, and promotional displays.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming front-end environment.
• Support pharmacy workflow by coordinating prescription pickup and communicating effectively with pharmacy technicians and pharmacists.
• Perform opening, closing, and cash reconciliation procedures.
• Follow all pharmacy policies, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience

• 3-5 years of experience as a Pharmacy Cashiers
• Previous cashier, retail, customer service, or pharmacy experience preferred.
• Experience in an independent or community pharmacy is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
• Strong communication and active listening abilities.
• Basic math and cash-handling skills with a high level of accuracy.
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
• Proficiency with POS systems and basic computer applications.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding patient information.
• Dependable, professional, and team-oriented.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous pharmacy cashier or pharmacy retail experience.
• Knowledge of HIPAA privacy requirements.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish or other languages) preferred but not required.

Work Environment

• Retail community pharmacy setting.
• Frequent interaction with patients, customers, pharmacists, healthcare providers, and team members.
• May require evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts based on business needs.
