Job Title: Med/Surg Registered Nurse (Level 1) Profession: RN Med/Surg Specialty: Acute Care Duration: Part Time Shift: Day/Night Variable Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours (2 shifts per week) Experience: One year experience in a Med/Surg environment as a Registered Nurse required License: NYS RN Licensure required Certifications: BLS, ACLS required Must-Have: Experience and certifications as stated Description: The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high quality compassionate care to patients and families. The RN assesses patient needs, develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates care delivery throughout the patient's episode. The Med/Surg RN develops specialized skills in the area of cardiac care, including telemetry monitoring. The RN is accountable for patient and family education to assist them in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and healing. He/She promotes comfort and provides emotional support in a healing environment. The RN applies nursing knowledge and skills in delivering care by actively listening, being socially perceptive, and analyzing data/information obtained through direct observation and assessment, technology, or health team communication. The RN creates a developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant, individualized plan of care to address the nature and scope of identified health problems. In collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and healthcare team members, the RN sets goals and monitors patient progress. The RN adjusts the plan based on patient response or changes in condition and reprioritizes needs as necessary. The RN promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient. The RN systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and uses results from quality improvement activities to initiate changes in individual nursing practice and influence care delivery. The RN engages in self-evaluation of practice, identifies strengths and areas for professional development, and takes accountability to increase knowledge and enhance skills. The RN uses logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. The RN demonstrates skill in the application of nursing interventions, including medication administration. The RN motivates the patient and family by teaching them what is needed to continue care and healing at home. The RN assesses the patient/family learning styles and structures educational sessions to maximize understanding. The RN seeks teachable moments during the care delivery process to emphasize pertinent information and asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in the self-care process. The RN provides tools and information to assist the patient and family after discharge and documents the education provided, along with patient/family responses. The RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to promote collaboration for the best possible patient outcomes. The RN teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. The RN complies with infection prevention strategies and maintains competencies required for the specific population assigned. The RN reports potential safety risks and inappropriate/questionable practices. The RN promotes leadership awareness and fosters positive change. The RN conducts rounds as per protocol and uses tools and equipment needed to keep patients and families informed, engaged, and safe. The RN’s practice reflects the importance of making meaningful connections with patients and families. The RN seeks to develop trusting, caring relationships by being present during interactions. The RN listens, communicates, engages, and anticipates the needs of the patient and family.
