SEMI-SKILLED LABORER

Position OverviewProvides basic maintenance and repair to structures, facilities, and equipment to ensure a safe and clean environment. Performs basic maintenance and repairs to structures, facilities, and equipment, i.e., housekeeping activities, fabrication and installations, routine cleaning and servicing of vehicles, and cement mixing and preparation. Operates power and hand tool equipment. Performs painting, roofing, carpentry, and plumbing activities. May operate vehicles to and from work locations. Ensure equipment is maintained and in safe working conditions daily. Communicate with all co-workers, supervisors, upper management, and other entities, to ensure all work is accomplished. Performs additional miscellaneous assignments as required.Working conditions include routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns. This position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.Minimum RequirementsEducational requirements include the ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling. No special knowledge of any subject area or technical field is required.Experience requirements include six months of working experience.License requirements include a valid Texas Class C driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.PreferencesPreference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.General InformationSelection/skills tests required: None.
