Job Description: QC Raw Material Chemist

Position Summary

The QC Raw Material Chemist is responsible for performing chemical and physical testing of raw materials to ensure compliance with established specifications, regulatory requirements, and company quality standards. This position supports the manufacture of personal care and cosmetic products through routine laboratory analysis, documentation, investigation support, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Chemistry Laboratory Responsibilities

• Perform analytical testing of incoming raw materials according to approved methods and specifications.
• Prepare reagents, standards, and laboratory solutions as required.
• Maintain accurate records of all testing activities and results.
• Investigate out-of-specification (OOS) results and assist with corrective actions.
• Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.
• Maintain the raw ingredient retest program and the raw ingredient retain sample program
• Support the raw ingredient qualification process with analytical testing.
• Manage the Defective Material process by segregating, labeling and restricting the use of defective materials, along with initiating and routing the disposition reports.

Quality and Compliance Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with GMP, GLP, SOPs, and company quality standards.
• Complete laboratory documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
• Review laboratory records for completeness and compliance.
• Participate in internal audits, inspections, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Assist with root cause investigations and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA).
• Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and safety practices.
• Support continuous improvement projects.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biology, or a related scientific discipline preferred.

Experience

• 3-5 years of laboratory experience in cosmetics, personal care, pharmaceuticals, food manufacturing, or related regulated industries preferred.
• Familiarity with GMP, GLP, and quality systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of cosmetic and personal care product testing methodologies.
• Ability to interpret specifications, test methods, and laboratory procedures.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Proficiency with laboratory instrumentation and computer systems.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for extended periods.
• Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to work with laboratory chemicals, microbiological materials, and standard laboratory equipment.
• Ability to use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
