Paralegal

This hybrid position located at Markel’s offices in Rosemont, Illinois or Omaha, Nebraska combines paralegal and administrative responsibilities to support Markel’s insurance legal team, focusing on regulatory, compliance, and transactional matters. Job Duties Provide broad legal and administrative support to in‑house attorneys supporting Markel’s insurance operations, with a primary focus on regulatory, compliance, corporate, and transactional matters, excluding litigation. Prepare and assist with regulatory filings, including insurance holding company filings, state regulatory submissions, licensing‑related filings, and other corporate regulatory documentation. Perform internet‑based factual and legal research and assist with special research projects. Track legislative and regulatory developments impacting the property and casualty insurance industry and assist in communicating relevant changes to attorneys and business partners. Monitor the relationship with third‑party vendors supporting NDA review processes and help track compliance with company requirements. Assist in drafting, organizing, and managing legal and regulatory documents. Maintain electronic filing systems and legal records to ensure documents are accurate, organized, and readily accessible. Interface with internal business partners, including Underwriting, Finance, Tax, Treasury, Compliance, and other departments, and serve as a liaison between the Legal Department and the rest of the company. Assist with coordinating signatures, notarizations, and execution of legal and regulatory documents. Maintain regulatory calendars and assist with tracking filing deadlines and reporting obligations. Support other legal operations, regulatory, and compliance initiatives as needed. Education Bachelor’s degree, Associate’s degree in paralegal studies, certification from an ABA‑approved paralegal program, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Work Experience / Skills At least five years of in‑house paralegal experience or other relevant legal, regulatory, or compliance experience. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong grammar, proofreading, and organizational abilities. Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Self‑motivated, resourceful, and able to work independently while thriving in a collaborative team environment. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build effective working relationships across departments and levels of the organization. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and SharePoint. Experience working with document management systems, legal operations tools, or workflow management systems is a plus. Notary Public designation is a plus. Prior insurance, regulatory, compliance, or financial services experience preferred, but not required. US Work Authorization US Work Authorization required. Pay Information The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job‑relevant education, job‑relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary range for the Paralegal position is $32 – $44 per hour with a 12% incentive.
