Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago Job Description RN candidates must have a minimum of 2 years of RN practice time with at least one year in Dialysis or Apheresis to be considered for an interview. Candidates will work 4 9-hour day shifts per week and will also take call approximately once every 3 weeks. Shifts may start at 7:30 or 8 am. The selected candidate will cross train to the Infusion Center, and may also staff in this area when there is a greater need. General Summary Of Position Responsibility This position serves patients from infancy through adolescence, as well as young adults with acute or chronic medical conditions requiring the specialty knowledge and skills of Hematology, Oncology, and Stem Cell Transplantation and Therapeutic Apheresis (TA). Performs all TA procedures-- autologous, allogeneic, donor collection, and therapeutic—under the direction of the attending physician, skilled in TA and in Compliance with policies and procedures established by Children’s Memorial Hospital. Utilizes the nursing process and performs responsibilities in five areas of nursing practice: clinician, clinical inquiry, teacher, professional development and leadership. Understands and integrates into the delivery of patient care the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and adult patients in regard to their growth and development process. Actively supports the Hospital and department’s quality goals and service excellence principles. Essential Job Functions Performs nursing assessments utilizing a variety of assessment methods and/or area-specific tools. Individualizes existing plans of care and develops goals relative to family needs. Evaluates and documents changes to the plan. Develops or individualizes teaching plans/protocols to meet patient and family learning needs. Identifies patient preferences and needs including motivation to learn. Evaluates and documents changes to the plan. Performs nursing care according to established CMH procedures/protocols. Anticipates impending emergent situations and intervenes effectively. Communicates with the family and members of the multidisciplinary team to identify health care needs. Communicates changes in patient status. Utilizes appropriate resources for referral or consultations. Keeps up to date in nursing practice and practice related to TA by utilizing current nursing and healthcare literature for information and problem solving. Incorporates current hospital and departmental quality initiatives into daily activities. Adheres to communication, service excellence, and professional image standards that support the hospital mission and philosophy. Works cooperatively as a team member to foster achievement of unit/hospital goals. Identifies learning needs and seeks resources to advance nursing practice and achieve professional goals. Charge Nurse Responsibilities Facilitates TA staff scheduling to appropriate meet staffing requirements for scheduled TA procedures. Coordinates TA procedure/ treatment schedule; serves as primary scheduling source for referring MD/APN and for patient/family; collaborates with POS to confirm that all procedures/treatments are correctly scheduled in EPIC. Collaborates with BIOMED to assure that TA machines/equipment are maintained according to established standards (cleaning, quality control); and maintains logs demonstrating compliance with maintenance requirements for each machine. Collaborates with TA nurses to take immediate corrective action for TA machine malfunctions as established by policies; document malfunctions and corrective actions according to established protocols; submits reports regarding machine malfunction and corrective actions taken to the SCTP Quality & Safety Committee for further recommendations regarding corrective actions required. Documents machine malfunction, notification of biomed, date machine serviced, validated (as needed) and available for use on Alarm Log and reports this information to quality meetings Collaborates with Central Supply Director to assure that adequate supplies are maintained for TA procedures; adjusts supply PARS according to trend changes in types of TA procedures/treatments performed and/or projected. Assures that all supplies utilized for TA procedures/treatments comply with required standards for inventory and quality control. Maintains Therapeutic Apheresis Preparation Packets, assuring that they have the most current forms & process checklist; and are available for physician access on 4W and PICU for emergency procedures. Maintains logs and reports TA quality control issues-- errors, variances, incidents and complaints—to Stem Cell Transplantation Program (SCTP) Quality & Safety Committee. Reviews and revises TA Standards Of Practice (SOP) annually under the direct supervision of the Therapeutic Apheresis Medical Director; assures compliance with current accreditation and regulatory agency standards for TA. Responsible for TA document control and distribution of all TA-related documents. Collaborates with Hematology, Oncology, & Transplantation Clinical Educator and Leadership to assure appropriate orientation for all new TA nurses. Collaborates with Hematology, Oncology, & Transplantation Clinical Educator and Leadership to assure that all TA nurses complete CMH or department specific competencies required for on-going education, including annual review of TA SOP by all TA nurses; and all CMH Mandatory Yearly Review competencies. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities BSN of an NLN accredited nursing program highly preferred; graduate of a NLN nursing program required. Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois. CPR certification. One year or more of Hematology, Oncology, & Transplantation nursing experience preferred; previous experience highly desirable. Completion of CMH Introduction to Hematology,& Oncology Diseases & Management; completion of CMH competencies for specific TA procedures; completion of CMH certification for care of Stem Cell Transplant patients required within 6 months of hire. Ability to effectively communicate with patient/families, physicians and hospital staff.
