Job Description The UCSF Neurology Program seeks a full‑time Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to help support our program. The UCSF team consists of highly experienced physicians, surgeons, nurses, social workers, researchers and others. Our Neurology program is nationally known for cutting‑edge neurology support in both the outpatient and inpatient setting and offers a variety of support systems (long‑term and short‑term). The APP will care for patients on the inpatient Neurology services at UCSF, Division of Neurology. Specific duties will include rounding with the inpatient team, answering pages from nurses, writing orders, writing notes (admit H & P, discharge summaries, significant event), evaluation and management of patients, and working with care team members for discharges. This role also includes evaluation and management for recently discharged patients as they establish outpatient care. The position provides an opportunity to gain skills in evaluating neurological patients, performing neurological examinations, and managing neurology conditions as part of a team‑based care model. Responsibilities Participate in managing hospitalized patients in the ICU and floor settings, coordinating with other team members. Round and examine patients; record subjective and objective findings in the chart and report findings to the physician. Check laboratory results, vital signs, intake/output, and pain scale, and report the results to the physician. Order medications on the approved medication list. Provide wound management, examine for signs of infection, order and change dressings, order or remove sutures or staples. Order speech therapy, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, psychological therapy, and occupational therapy, as appropriate. Refer patients to social work services, nutrition service, and home health care. Refer patients and call on consultation from medical specialties. Order nutritional supplementation and enteric nutrition. Order laboratory tests and radiologic studies. Write transfer orders to appropriate levels of care. Remove and place chest tubes, internal jugular lines, central lines, intra‑operatively placed drains, surgical dressings, and Foley catheters. Provide patient teaching, counseling, and discharge planning. Obtain arterial blood gas and blood cultures. Document in database and hospital Electronic Health Record system as directed by UCSF Health standard policies and procedures. Initiate management of complications while notifying the attending physician. Care Coordination, Clinical Review, and Administrative Duties Clinical documentation and patient care follow‑up. Patient advice requests escalated from triage RNs, administrative staff, or other care providers. In‑basket management – results review, expiring orders, telephone encounters, patient advice requests, cc’d charts. Answer patient emails escalated to provider for further evaluation. Participate in neurology‑related CME activities. Support development of unit‑based procedures, clinical practice standards, provide in‑house education through informal and formal sessions, and support the teaching mission through APP student placements in the clinic when possible. Other clinical and administrative responsibilities as required. Authorization and Protocol Development The Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA/CRNA/CNM) is authorized to order, adjust, and furnish medications as appropriate for the care of the patient and according to the formulary listed in Standardized Procedures. Assist in formulating and implementing protocols to improve efficiency in the clinical specialty/service/pathways. Engage in a timely and efficient discharge of patients on the inpatient service for which you are responsible. Assist in coordinating patient transfers within and outside UCSF Health according to policy. Be familiar with outcome metrics, guidelines, and expectations for providers in clinical specialty. Perform other duties as assigned. Position requires flexibility to work at all UCSF Health licensed facilities. Support outpatient team as needed/indicated to ensure quality care of patients. Required Qualifications One (1) year of employment as a Nurse Practitioner. Flexibility to work in varying schedules as outlined (days, weekends, holidays, rotations). Preferred Qualifications One (1) year of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in neurology. One (1) to two (2) years of experience as a UCSF nurse or APP in an acute care/critical care setting. License and Certifications California driver’s license (CDL) if required for position. Current national certification from an accepted certifying agency; valid at first day of work. Accepted certifications for this adult position: Adult inpatient (ACNP‑BC, AGACNP‑BC, ACNPC‑AG, ACNPC). Current and active RN, NP, and furnishing license in California. Completed a BRN‑recognized graduate master’s degree program as a nurse practitioner. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration with Schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 registered to a California address. Submit enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day; CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments. Current AHA BLS. Current AHA ACLS. State regulation requires a supervising physician to practice. Incumbents with less than six months of NP experience will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner 1. Credentialing UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day.
