Licensed Veterinary Technician

February 10, 2026 PURPOSE Responsible for assessing animal health, administering medications and vaccines, treating minor injuries and illnesses under established protocols, and ensuring proper sanitation and disease prevention. Support animal welfare by maintaining accurate medical records, identifying animals that need advanced care, and promoting a safe, healthy environment for both animals and staff. The Veterinary Technician reports directly to the Animal Control Supervisor. This position does not include diagnosing, prescribing, or performing surgical procedures and operates under established shelter protocols and consulting veterinarian guidance. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Perform basic medical care, including but not limited to intravenous injections, blood draws, medication administration, vaccinations, subcutaneous fluids, catheter placement, and microchipping, under written shelter protocols or guidance from a consulting veterinarian. Maintain knowledge of sterile techniques, basic pharmacology, surgical recovery monitoring, humane restraint for medical procedures, and emergency stabilization within the limits of training and shelter protocols. Maintain a clean and disinfected work environment, manage controlled substance logs, and accurately enter and maintain medical records and data. Provide daily animal care, including feeding, cleaning, walking, handling, and socialization for cats and dogs with varying health and behavioral needs. Work collaboratively with team members across shelter operations to achieve lifesaving goals; follow established policies, procedures, and daily task assignments with accurate and timely communication, work completion, and recordkeeping. Demonstrate a customer‑centric, non‑judgmental approach when engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues, comfortable with a conversational adoption process. Safely handle, leash, kennel, and restrain cats and dogs, including those with medical and/or behavioral conditions; recognize and communicate observable medical or behavioral concerns to appropriate supervisory staff or consulting veterinarians. Ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced environment, manage multiple competing priorities, and maintain strong organizational skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products; familiarity with shelter or animal management software preferred, or willingness to learn. QUALIFICATIONS Graduate from an AVMA accredited veterinary technician certification program. Strong knowledge of animal health assessment, disease recognition, and biosecurity practices. Proficiency in administering vaccines and medications (oral, topical, injectable) according to protocol. Experience with infectious disease control, isolation procedures, and sanitation standards. A minimum of one year working experience as a veterinary technician or equivalent work experience in an animal welfare or nonprofit setting preferred. Knowledge of animal behavior, welfare, and care standards. Ability to handle stressful or emergency situations calmly and effectively. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with staff, the public, and various community organizations. Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records. Valid driver’s license and ability to operate animal control vehicles. Bilingual or multi‑lingual skills are preferred but not required. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES High School diploma or general equivalency degree; one year of experience related to animal care. Certification in animal euthanasia. Current Texas Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) license required. Applicant must have completed an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program and passed the VTNE and Texas state jurisprudence exam. PHYSICAL ABILITIES Ability to communicate in the English language both orally and in written form. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to produce reports. Ability to deal tactfully with the public. Ability to lift 100 pounds. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
