Development Manager

ABOUT THE POSITION

Good Grief is seeking a highly mission-focused individual to join its team. The Development Manager is responsible for supporting all aspects of the development department to grow and cultivate our donor base. The position will be focused on event management for our 5Ks, gala, golf and third party events. It also includes administrative tasks for the department including gift management and acknowledgement. The candidate must be highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced team environment. Strong verbal and written communication skills are paramount. While this position is based in Princeton, travel within the community and between Good Grief center locations is required. Can be based out of either our Morristown or Princeton location.

Key responsibilities of this position include:

EVENTS

• Plan, budget, and implement annual fundraisers, including on-site leadership and management during each event.
• Establish event sponsorship opportunities and corresponding benefits. In partnership with the Director of Development and the event committees, perform outreach to corporate prospects, including: draft sponsorship and event fundraising proposals, manage the proposal process, strategize on approach, track opportunities, manage timelines, and provide follow-up.
• Manage all income/expense reporting for each event, and prepare appropriate analysis and reports.
• Manage all event data to ensure names of attendees, volunteers, donors, vendors, etc. and data becomes part of the Good Grief donor management database.
• Recruit, organize, coordinate and manage enthusiastic event committees and volunteers for events.
• Work with the development team to analyze trends and grow participation and fundraising for events year over year.
• Lead the communication efforts for the outreach to potential event participants, and current event participants.
• Work with a graphic designer for event collateral.
• Support and promote third-party fundraisers, including material development and donor cultivation.
• Help plan other internal events, such as donor cultivation events, as needed.

ADMINISTRATION

• Responsible for gift processing including batching checks, pulling weekly gift lists from the database, and the administration of all third party gift processing programs.
• Depositing checks and working with our accounting firm to ensure all gifts are identified and accounted for.
• In accordance with the stewardship plan, make sure all gifts are acknowledged properly:
  • Prepare letters when appropriate and send to the signator; and
  • Assign all stewardship actions that are to be completed by the Director of Development, Executive Director, or portfolio manager as a task in our donor database.

GRANTS

• Assist in the research, identification, writing and submission of grants.
• Follow up with grant reports as needed.

OTHER

• Manage the stewardship of a portfolio of donors.
• Assist in other development activities throughout the year as needed.
• Be a public facing team member, giving tours and representing Good Grief at community/third party events when appropriate.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
• 3-5 years of relevant work experience is preferred.
• Ability to meet deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills and organizational awareness to work effectively with both internal and external stakeholders. This is a public facing role, and comfortability communicating with others is key.
• Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, self-driven, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced team environment.
• Proficiency with Google applications (Gmail, Google Drive, etc.), and a working knowledge of database management are preferred.
• Ability to manage an event budget and possess a basic understanding of non-profit financial terms.
• Flexibility with work schedule: this position requires some evening and weekend work during the event season, and the ability to work between our Princeton and Morristown Centers, as needed.
• As a small, lean organization, all team members are required to take on additional responsibilities as they arise.
