Nurse Supervisor – Behavioral Health - Must have at least 5+ years in a supervisory/manager position:

Responsible for providing clinical and operational leadership for inpatient behavioral health services. This role oversees nursing staff, ensures high-quality patient care, promotes a safe therapeutic environment, and supports compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. The Nurse Supervisor collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to enhance patient outcomes, improve staff performance, and maintain excellence in psychiatric and behavioral health nursing practice.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

• Provide direct supervision and support to behavioral health nursing staff across assigned units.
• Ensure the delivery of safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care for individuals with psychiatric and behavioral health needs.
• Monitor patient care activities and intervene as needed to support positive patient outcomes.
• Assist with crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, and management of psychiatric emergencies.
• Ensure adherence to hospital policies, behavioral health protocols, and regulatory requirements.

Staff Supervision & Development

• Supervise, mentor, and evaluate Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Mental Health Technicians, and other support staff.
• Assist with staff scheduling, staffing assignments, and coverage needs.
• Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching to support professional growth.
• Participate in recruitment, onboarding, orientation, and retention initiatives.
• Promote employee engagement, teamwork, and a culture of accountability.

Quality & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with standards established by regulatory and accrediting agencies, including state and federal requirements and accreditation organizations such as The Joint Commission.
• Monitor quality indicators, patient safety metrics, and performance improvement initiatives.
• Participate in audits, investigations, and corrective action plans as needed.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and support documentation compliance efforts.

Operations Management

• Coordinate daily unit operations to ensure appropriate patient flow and staffing.
• Collaborate with physicians, social workers, therapists, case managers, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement treatment plans.
• Assist with budget management, resource utilization, and operational efficiency initiatives.
• Serve as a clinical resource and leader during emergencies and critical incidents.

Patient & Family Support

• Foster a therapeutic and recovery-oriented environment for patients and families.
• Support patient advocacy and ensure patients' rights are maintained.
• Address patient, family, and staff concerns in a timely and professional manner.

Education

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
• Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.

Licensure & Certifications

• Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification or equivalent preferred.
• Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Certification preferred.

Experience

• Minimum of 3–5+ years of behavioral health or psychiatric nursing experience required.
• Previous charge nurse, supervisory, or leadership experience preferred.
• Experience in an acute care hospital behavioral health setting strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong knowledge of psychiatric nursing principles and behavioral health treatment modalities.
• Experience managing patients with acute psychiatric disorders, substance use disorders, and behavioral crises.
• Excellent leadership, communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills.
• Ability to prioritize and make sound clinical decisions in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong understanding of patient safety, risk management, and regulatory compliance requirements.
• Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and clinical documentation.
