Staff Nurse

Job Title and Overview 32‑hour/week Oncology Registered Nurse focused on patient assessment, education, coordination of care, administration of therapy, symptom management, and supportive care for oncology and hematology patients at Dana‑Farber Cancer Institute. The RN provides direct patient care, telephone nursing, charge capture/billing, and psychosocial support as part of a multidisciplinary team. Key Responsibilities Perform nursing assessment, develop diagnoses, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care using the nursing process. Administer chemotherapy and other medications, including blood transfusions, and manage intravenous therapy with peripheral and central catheters. Conduct telephone triage and document interactions; provide charge capture and billing for all services rendered. Educate patients and families about treatment modalities, symptom management, and disease processes. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, providers, and community resources to facilitate referrals and continuity of care. Maintain BLS certification and stay current with institutional policies, ASCO/ONS guidelines, and regulatory requirements. Document care accurately, comply with professional nursing standards, and support the Nursing Department's Professional Practice Model. Serve as a resource for nursing staff in other health facilities, offering telephone consultation and best practice guidance. Participate in quality assurance, QI projects, committees, and initiatives; adapt to changing priorities and additional responsibilities. Supervise assistive personnel as required and provide mentorship to new staff. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required Effective interdisciplinary teamwork and communication. Critical thinking, problem‑solving, and independent decision‑making. Mandated mandatory IV skills strongly preferred. Physical stamina for walking, standing, bending, and lifting; must have adequate hearing and vision. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including telephone interactions. Ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain focus amid interruptions, and balance stress. Proficiency in English reading, writing, and mathematical pharmaceutical calculations. Understanding of special needs of various age groups, from young adults to geriatrics. Minimum Job Qualifications Registered Nurse licensure in Massachusetts or New Hampshire. At least one year of recent RN experience; ambulatory and/or oncology experience preferred. Bachelor’s degree in nursing strongly preferred; associate degree candidates must complete a BSN within four years. Professional certifications such as OCN, CMTCN, CPHON, AOCNP, CRNI, RN‑BC preferred; BLS certification required (ACLS acceptable as minimum). Supervisory Responsibilities No direct supervision of others, but the RN supervises assistive personnel in patient care as appropriate.
