Summary Statement
This is the first level of constable work. Constables are uniformed, sworn Peace Officers carrying firearms and possessing the power of arrest. Employees independently perform the full range of protection and security services within court facilities and assist in serving and executing legal documents in the community.

This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization) that has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other applicable terms and conditions of employment, in accordance with Title 29, Chapter 59 and Title 19, Chapter 13 and 16. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement based on its individual terms.
Conditions of Hire
As a condition of hire the applicant must agree to successfully complete a 50-hour training program in firearms and training in handcuffs, chemical defense spray, baton, and wand approved by the Delaware Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission. Possession of a Delaware POST Certification, or the equivalent, may satisfy this requirement.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. The State of Delaware participates in the Federal E-Verify system where the State will provide the federal government with each new hires Form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S. For more information refer to our job seeker resources. Essential Functions This is the first level of constable work. Constables are uniformed, sworn Peace Officers carrying firearms and possessing the power of arrest. Employees independently perform the full range of protection and security services within court facilities and assist in serving and executing legal documents in the community.
- Receives general supervision from a technical or administrative supervisor; the supervisor provides general direction on all assignments, and regular review of progress, accuracy, and quality of work. Supervisory advice or assistance is provided as needed.
- Performs armed, enforcement, protection and security work and assists higher-level staff with field work.
- Inspects the assigned courtroom and court facility for explosives, firearms, and weapons, and searches individuals entering the court facility, confiscates unauthorized weapons and contraband, and takes custody of evidence in court which may include securing guns, ammunition, and knives.
- Sets up, operates, troubleshoots, and monitors various electronic equipment such as CCTV (closed circuit television), paging systems, wireless microphones, audiovisual systems, audio and video recorders, overhead projectors, two-way radios, metal detectors, surveillance cameras, and panic alarms.
- Communicates effectively with judicial personnel, law enforcement agencies, contracted security, and the public to maintain security and control behavior, and to gather, relay, or provide information.
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
- At least 21 years of age.
- Six months' experience in security such as providing protective services to persons, facilities or grounds from trespassing, theft, and other conditions.
- Six months' experience in record keeping such as maintaining records, logs, and managing filing systems used for such records.
- Six months' experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
