Crime Analyst

MONTHLY SALARY: $6,985 - $8,575 PLUS AN EXCELLENT BENEFITS PACKAGE FILING DEADLINE: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2026, 5:00 PM Under general direction, the Crime Analyst provides comprehensive analytical, intelligence, and administrative support to the Police Department. This role involves researching, collecting, analyzing, and disseminating crime-related data from various sources. The Crime Analyst identifies crime patterns, trends, and series, offering timely information and recommendations to enhance law enforcement operations and strategic planning. Additionally, the position provides investigative support and performs other related duties as assigned. The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Research, analyze, and collect data from a variety of sources to identity and evaluate crime series, patterns and trends. Interpret and provide statistical information for department staff members. Communicate and collaborate with Investigative and Patrol staff to discuss, review, and evaluate crime patterns, trends, and possible intervention strategy for findings. Develop and prepare crime summaries, statistical reports, spreadsheets, charts, maps, diagrams, graphs and related materials in order to track and present findings related to criminal activity, patterns and trends. Collect, review, and analyze a variety of internal and external reports in order to determine if offenders can be identified, extra deployment is needed and if preventative measures are necessary. Prepare predictive summary based on reported statistics, crimes, activity and analysis of typical behavior patterns. Troubleshoot and utilize department use of platforms and supporting platforms related to public crime mapping and in-house analytical software. Prepare and present staff reports. Testify in court on work product, findings, and methodologies. Review and respond to information requests, both internally and externally. Review and respond to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on local, state, and national crime trends and statistics. Serve as department liaison to local crime intelligence groups and organizations, as directed. Perform other related duties as assigned. Knowledge of: Methods and procedures of conducting crime analysis and research, including data collection, statistical analyses, and report preparation. Functions, organization, principles, and practices of law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement terminology, codes, and processes. Principles and practices of administrative and operational analyses, research evaluation, and methodology. Techniques, methods, and procedures of criminal investigative procedures. Use and analysis of law enforcement databases and social media for investigative purposes. Real time activities of law enforcement officers during a diverse range of operations. Protocols for distributing criminal information to patrol officers and outside agencies. Methods and techniques of analyzing operational metrics such as patrol response average times, deployment analysis, and statistical requests. Statistical research and analysis techniques. Business letter writing and the standard format for reports and correspondence. Recordkeeping principles and procedures. Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations, as related to area of assignment. City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols. Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff. The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed. Skills: Possess skills to word process general correspondence, spread sheets, and reports using a personal computer and software application. Ability to: Recognize, identify, and document crime series and patterns. Collect, analyze, interpret, and document complex statistical data. Understand the organization and operation of the City's Police Department and of outside law enforcement agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities. Perform professional duties in the analysis of a variety of complex crime, criminal, and intelligence data. Provide assistance to law enforcement staff in their investigations and operations. Analyze operational objectives and issues, evaluate alternatives, and reach sound, logical, fact-based conclusions and recommendations; prepare reports and recommendations. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions; Establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and members of the public contacted during the course of work. Attend and participate in law enforcement meetings or community activities such as Neighborhood Watch, within assigned areas of responsibility. Properly develop and interpret complex tables, charts, and graphs. Serve as a liaison with other law enforcement agencies for the purpose of mutual exchanges of information. Prepare clear and effective reports, correspondence, and other written material. Understand, interpret, and apply pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, rules, regulations, standards, and City policies and procedures related to the work performed. Effectively represent the department and the City in meetings with governmental agencies, community groups, various businesses, and professional organizations, and in meetings with individuals. Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments. Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines. Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Work independently and as part of a team. Education and Experience Guidelines— Any combination of equivalent education, training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be: Education/Training: A certification in crime analysis from an accredited college or university is required. A bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university, in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Statistics is highly desirable. AND Experience: Two (2) or more years of experience in crime analysis, data analysis, within a law enforcement environment (preferred). Proficiency in crime analysis tools such as ArcGIS, Excel, Power BI, Crystal Reports, Palantir. Working knowledge of the Motorola Flex CAD/RMS systems is preferred. Strong knowledge of statistical methods, research techniques, and law enforcement terminology. Excellent written, oral, and visual communication skills with the ability to present complex data in a clear and effective manner. License: A valid California Class C driver's license is required.
