Overview of Position / Department

Performs a variety of complex administrative support and public contact to educate and license taxpayers in Tax & Licensing Division of the Finance Department.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Performs licensing activities including compliance, invoicing, posting, scheduling, and collection
• Conducts on-site visits to ensure licensing compliance; researches and handles routine licensing issues; provides customer service pertaining to state and local licensing laws, policies, and procedures
• Interacts with various agencies and City departments; conducts liquor-related hearings; provides technical assistance and administrative support to the Local Licensing Authority
• Composes routine correspondence; assists with liquor training seminars
• Educates and counsels taxpayers on licenses, sales, use, occupational privilege taxes, and collection; prepares reports, statistical data, documents, and manuals; responsible for fingerprinting clients
• Works with the Aurora Police Department, State of Colorado Liquor Enforcement Division, code enforcement, and the Building and Zoning Departments
• Performs additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications & Working Conditions

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:

• Associate's degree with courses in business, accounting, or directly related field required or the equivalent in training and experience including public contact may be considered.

Experience:

• At least 2 years' licensing or clerical accounting including at least 1 year of paralegal experience involving public contact. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

• Certificate from State Department of Revenue for Alcohol Law Education must be obtained within 6 months of hire date.
• Colorado Driver's License with good driving history and current automobile insurance

• None

Knowledge:

• Knowledge of basic office practices and procedures; business English, math; liquor licensing rules and regulations; and personal computer with word processing software applications.

Skills:

• Strong interpersonal skills
• Excellent verbal, and written communications skills
• Proficiency in the Tax & Licensing computer system, spreadsheet and word processing applications.
• Can accurately and efficiently key information using a keyboard.

Abilities:

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, legal professionals, and citizens
• Communicate effectively verbally and in writing; must be detail-oriented, thorough, accurate, organized, and able to work in a multi-tasked environment
• Ability to speak Spanish desirable.

Working Conditions

• Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
• Physical Demands: Medium work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds with or without assistance at a time with or without assistance. Hand/eye coordination to operate computer and office equipment. Hand/foot coordination for operation of transcription equipment; vision for reading, recording, and interpreting information. Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
• Work Environment: Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment.
• Equipment Used: Routinely uses telephone, computer with related software, printer, calculator, copier, fax, microfiche reader/printer, and fingerprinting kit

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
