Job Description Summary MUSC Health Emergency and Urgent Care, a part of MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center Downtown, located at 7624 Garners Ferry Rd, provides a seamless, patient‑centered approach to care. Entity Medical University Hospital Authority (MUHA) Worker Type Employee Worker Sub‑Type Regular Pay Rate Type Hourly Pay Grade Health‑22 Scheduled Weekly Hours 36 Job Responsibilities Perform sample assessment, receipt, accessioning, processing and testing to support high‑quality laboratory results and maintain supply/stock (65%). Prepare specimens for testing. Perform positive patient identification using two identifiers. Evaluate specimen acceptability. Record specimen receipt in the electronic laboratory computer system. Ensure correct labeling practices. Evaluate orders and assess using the electronic laboratory computer system. Conduct routine laboratory testing using both automated and non‑automated methods following established procedures. Recognize normal and abnormal laboratory values. Identify computer data problems. Communicate technical testing information to medical and lay persons following Standards of Behaviors. Create and review test/specimen pending worklists. Ensure benches are stocked appropriately. Perform quality‑controlled reagent testing for new lots/shipment and adhere to manufacturer procedures. Order reagents at designated par levels. Support test and instrument validation activities. Document critical test results per established policies. Maintain laboratory environment and perform instrument maintenance per manufacturer instructions. Participate in process improvement activities; document findings. Complete procedure and policy sign‑offs and competency documentation by deadlines. Assist in the orientation and training of new staff, students, and residents, providing documentation and feedback. Quality Control Responsibilities Perform quality control testing, instrument maintenance, and competency activities in a timely manner. Document QC procedures and mandatorily report results. Verify QC prior to patient result reporting. Troubleshoot equipment, instruments, and result issues, documenting logs and communicating with the team. Ensure proper instrument maintenance per manufacturer guidelines. Teaching and Continuous Education Actively participate in an environment conducive to teaching healthcare practitioners in Laboratory Services. Provide positive experiences for students, residents, and practitioners. Engage in continuing education and model Standards of Behavior. Physical Requirements Prolonged standing, sitting, hand/eye coordination, manual dexterity, stooping and lifting up to 25 lbs. Must have vision and hearing within normal limits (with or without correction) and must not be color blind. Requires protective clothing when handling biohazardous materials. Ability to read, interpret, and apply written labels, instructions, and guidelines. Requires effective verbal and written communication. Weekend, holiday, and overtime rotations may be required. MLT I/II Requirements Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology and certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) or equivalent. If not certified, certification must be obtained within the first year of employment. Less than one year of clinical experience. Certification: Must be a Medical Laboratory Technician certified by ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) or equivalent, with certification obtained within the first year if not already certified.
