Lead Fleet Mechanic / Shop Foreman

A.P.J. Equipment Corp, an affiliated company of Umbro & Sons Construction Corp, is seeking an experienced Lead Fleet Mechanic / Shop Foreman to oversee fleet maintenance and shop operations for a busy Boston-based heavy civil construction company.

This position will be employed through A.P.J. Equipment Corp , which supports the equipment, vehicle, and shop operations for our affiliated construction company, Umbro & Sons Construction Corp .

We are a small, family-owned group of companies that has performed complex excavation and replacement of water, sewer, and drain mains in the streets of Boston for over 50 years. We also operate a winter snow plowing operation. Our fleet includes excavators, loaders, dump trucks, compressors, rollers, gas-powered trucks, and a wide range of support equipment.

This is a hands-on leadership role for a highly skilled mechanic who can take ownership of the shop, keep equipment moving, communicate well with field crews, coordinate outside repairs, and help maintain a safe, organized, DOT-compliant fleet operation.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate daily shop activities, repair priorities, preventative maintenance, parts needs, and equipment availability

• Perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, compressors, rollers, and support equipment

• Troubleshoot diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, air brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, HVAC systems, and related components

• Manage preventative maintenance schedules to reduce avoidable breakdowns and downtime

• Communicate clearly with operators, foremen, management, vendors, dealers, and outside repair shops

• Coordinate parts ordering, inspections, specialty diagnostics, dealer repairs, and outside service

• Maintain organized repair records, inspection documentation, maintenance files, and shop systems

• Support DOT/FMCSA inspection, repair, maintenance, annual inspection, brake inspection, and recordkeeping requirements

• Promote safe work practices during repairs, welding, fabrication, tire service, heavy lifting, and hot work

• Mentor, supervise, or work alongside other shop personnel as needed

• Open and close the shop as required

• Respond to urgent equipment issues during construction and snow operations

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years of experience repairing and maintaining heavy equipment, commercial trucks, and construction support equipment

• Strong diesel engine, hydraulic, electrical, air brake, suspension, drivetrain, and general mechanical troubleshooting skills

• CDL Class A license with acceptable driving record

• Massachusetts Hoisting License, 2A and 1C

• OSHA 10-hour certificate

• NFPA Hot Work Safety Certificate

• DOT Medical Card

• Ability to communicate clearly in English with crews, vendors, and management

• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities

• Familiarity with DOT/FMCSA maintenance, inspection, repair, annual inspection, brake inspection, and recordkeeping requirements

• Ability to work extended hours and overtime when needed, especially during peak construction season and snow operations

Desired Experience / Certifications

• ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certifications, especially Diesel Engines, Brakes, Suspension & Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, and Preventive Maintenance Inspection

• ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician or ASE L2 Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist certification

• Experience with Cat, Komatsu, Mack, or similar heavy equipment and truck brands

• Experience in fleet, heavy civil construction, dealer, municipal, utility, or similar maintenance environments

• Experience supervising mechanics, helpers, vendors, or shop personnel

• Experience improving maintenance tracking systems, repair logs, parts controls, and PM schedules

Compensation & Benefits

• Pay range: $31.00 – $62.00 per hour (straight time) , based on experience, licenses, certifications, ability, and fit

Schedule

This is a full-time, in-person shop position with a regular Monday through Friday schedule of approximately 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM with a 30-minute meal break. The regular schedule generally results in 50 paid hours per week , with overtime paid after 40 hours. Additional evening or weekend overtime may be available or required when needed for urgent repairs, active field operations, or snow response.

Pay: $31.00 - $62.00 per hour
