Histotechnologist – St. Mary's HospitalThe Histotechnologist will perform various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing tissue specimens for microscopic examination by the Pathologist. The Histology Technologist needs to ensure tissue specimens received from surgical, diagnostic, or autopsy cases are sorted, logged, and prioritized according to the standards required. This role has a greater focus on troubleshooting, problem-solving, and methodology, which contains fewer common techniques and requires a deeper understanding of the chemistry and diseases behind tissue identification and test selection.Essential Functions:Performs histological procedures including accessioning, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and stainingAssists the Pathologist in the gross examination of surgical specimens and in frozen section proceduresReport accurate and timely test results to deliver quality patient careDocument problems that may affect test performance and perform corrective actions when neededOperates and maintains all histology area lab equipment in the proper state of readiness, cleanliness, and sharpens and hone microtome knivesMonitors inventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents used, and places orders for replacements as requiredOther duties as assignedRequired Education:Bachelor's Degree in Lab Science, Chemistry, or BiologyBachelors, Lab Science, Chemistry, or Biology (required) for BSMH.For RSFH, as of 4/21/25, new hires are required to have Bachelors for RSFH.Certifications:Histotechnologist (HLT) Certification by a nationally recognized certification agency (preferably ASCP) (preferred, not required)Experience:One year of Histology experience preferred, not requiredOne year of Clinical Lab experience preferred, not requiredSkills & Abilities:Encourages other lab personnel to work towards professional growth and development by sharing informationAbility to work independently within a team and strong attention to detailAbility to provide quality, error-free work in a fast-pasted environmentEngage with staff and patients in a professional mannerAs a Bon Secours Mercy Health associate, you're part of a Mission that matters.
