Field Service Technician

Role Summary As a Field Service Technician, you will deliver exceptional customer service by providing onsite mobile repairs at customer facilities. Your work will involve quality workmanship, meeting AAR Requirements, and providing accurate industry-standard formatted billing. Responsibilities Successfully complete, perform, and maintain the Field Service Apprentice job functions. Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Meet the requirements and pass CFRS’ welding procedures (3/4" plate - all position FCAW) and FCAW T2 thickness – all position. Apply knowledge of AAR Job Codes and associated data field requirements, and properly use AAR Rule 1 and various inspection gauges. Perform trouble‑shooting diagnostics at customer locations based on defect symptoms reported (BT, VT, PT, MP, RVI, UTT). Documented training includes setting up and operating or driving equipment such as forklift, man lift, crane, backhoe, skid loader, hoist, or hydraulic boom. Attend and successfully complete education/formal training requirements. Wear PPE in appropriate areas. Act to support the interests of the department and organization, and perform other duties as assigned to ensure the achievement of departmental and company objectives. Qualifications & Education High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED). Successfully pass the following courses with an 80% or higher score: AAR Interchange Rules, Freight Car Inspection Overview Basics of Railroad Wheels, FRA Railroad Safety Appliance Standards (Condensed Course), Coupler & Draft Systems, Guide to Freight Car Trucks, Body and Truck Side Bearing Gaging and Adjustment Course. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and BRC generation software/shop operating system. Ability to deliver a high level of customer service via phone and face‑to‑face interaction. Team player with effective listening and communication skills, both verbal and written. Language skills: read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations in English. Mathematical skills: add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Reasoning skills: apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Physical Demands The job requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, crawling, and crouching in strained and awkward positions for prolonged periods at various heights up to 20 feet. Workers must climb vertical ladders or suspended platforms, lift, carry, and set up equipment and components that weigh up to 50 lbs. Workers must be medically certified to wear a respirator and can wear respirators for prolonged periods. Additional capabilities include operating welding equipment, electrical and pneumatic tools, heavy equipment (cranes, jacks), forklifts, mobile service trucks, boom lifts, and driving company vehicles within a 200-mile region. Work Environment Work is performed outdoors and indoors in all weather conditions. The environment includes wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and moderate to loud noise. Overtime or varied shifts may be required.
