Work is performed under regular supervision. Work may be specialized according to the assigned division. Essential Functions Performs inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs of pump stations and other utility treatment and storage tank facilities and systems. Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, electronic, and SCADA problems; performs necessary repairs. Maintains pumps, valves, blowers, filters, screens, emergency motors, generators, and other equipment. Performs inspection and maintenance of pumping stations and other facilities; repairs or replaces malfunctioning parts and equipment. Operates vacuum/jet truck and other equipment. Inspects and maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles for proper use and care. Performs other public utilities maintenance work as required. Education and Experience A high school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience as a Mechanic Trainee or equivalent. Experience working with PLC logic control or SCADA systems is preferred. Special Qualifications A driver’s license valid in the State of Florida. Must obtain a Wastewater Collection Class C and a Stormwater Class C Certification, within two years of employment or promotion. Alternates with others on a rotating standby off‑hours call schedule as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the procedures, practices, and standards of the repair and maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical pumping station equipment. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work. Skill in the use of common hand tools, power tools, and other tools of the trade. Ability to determine improper operation of pumping equipment and take remedial action. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other personnel and the public. Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions. Ability to operate personal computers. Ability to safely operate City equipment or vehicles while observing all applicable laws, regulations, and policies. Ability to perform skilled and technical work for extended periods, often under adverse conditions. Ability to perform overtime, holiday, and weekend work as needed. This position is part of the Qualification Advancement Program. To advance to Mechanic II, an employee must complete the minimum hours required for licensure as prescribed by DEP and obtain Wastewater Collection Class B Certification and Stormwater Class B Certification. Physical Demands The work requires the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required. Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium. Climbing: Ascending or descending terrain, ladders, stairs, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet. Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine. Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm. Hearing: Required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees. Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling. Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers. Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles. Visual Acuity: Required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Vocal Communication: Required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another. Work Environment Work is performed inside and outside under environmental conditions such as extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, working in confined spaces, and wearing an appropriate respiratory protection device as necessary. The worker may be exposed to blood borne and/or waterborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
