Summary About the Position: Serves as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic for the 596th U.S. Army Transportation Surface Brigade, Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point Office of the Commander located in Southport, North Carolina. Responsibilities Perform repair work on heavy duty mobile equipment and/or vehicles. Disassemble engines to determine the extent of repair. Utilize testing equipment to ensure units are operating properly. Interpret instructions to complete a repair task. Drive heavy-duty mobile equipment to complete trade tasks. Use testing equipment to find hard-to-locate problems. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic tasks including repair work and preventive maintenance repairs on mobile equipment and vehicles. I can disassemble engines, transmissions, brake systems and tires. I can use hand tools of the trade. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Trouble Shooting Use of Measuring Instruments PHYSICAL EFFORT Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. At times, works on top of or under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds, and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling and depressing of various hand and foot controls. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed inside and occasionally outside and subject to extreme weather conditions, in cramped and awkward positions; shop area is frequently inadequately heated; work is dirty, greasy and noisy; possibility exists for injury from dropped units and parts, slipping tools, slipping from work position. Inside work is usually performed on concrete floors and involves frequent exposure to exhaust fumes. Prescribed safety practices and safety equipment is used; protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and may be worn or used for long periods.
