Teacher Assistant: Special Education – Richard Henry Lee Elementary – Glen Burnie, Maryland Job Summary Performs duties under the direction of the classroom teacher and/or service provider to support instruction, supervision, and care of students with disabilities in the K-2 Resource Room. Responsibilities include observing and documenting student progress, implementing instructional and behavioral plans, and assisting with medical and personal care needs. The position may be a 10‑ or 12‑month appointment. Essential Duties / Responsibilities Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials to reinforce objectives. Assist in implementing instructional programs and lesson plans, providing instruction in individual and group activities. Participate in implementing IEP goals and behavioral plans for students with special needs. Perform clerical tasks related to instructional material preparation. Maintain data collection and documentation of student activities, assignments, and assistance provided. Attend meetings, professional development, medical and behavioral trainings. Assist with first aid, personal care tasks, and application of medical equipment as directed. Assist students with mobility needs, including wheelchair transfer and transportation. Assist with use of electronic communicators and other assistive technology. Assist with pre‑lunch and lunch activities and monitor students during assigned periods. Perform other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate. For Title I schools: 48 college credit hours or a passing score on a Parapro assessment issued by ETS or NES. Previous experience working with students with disabilities (preferred). Considerable patience and ability to work with students who have physical, cognitive, and behavioral challenges. Willingness to learn and implement instructional methods and strategies. Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to meet diverse learner needs. Ability to meet IEP goals and district benchmarks. Ability to present and reinforce learning concepts. Knowledge of maintaining functional equipment. Effective communication with diverse populations. Proficiency with business software such as Microsoft Office Suite and video/web conferencing (preferred). Active licenses, certifications, and enrollment required. Valid Maryland Driver's License Class C (non‑commercial) and reliable transportation. Physical Demands Standing, walking, and sitting under varying percentages of time. Keyboarding, talking, and hearing during most of the shift. Driving between 1/3 and 2/3 of the time. Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds as required. Travel Requirements Approximately 20% daily travel within the county to assist at other schools, parks, libraries, and similar locations.
