Instructional Assistant/Medically Fragile-Orthopedically Impaired

Basic Function Under the general supervision of an administrator and general direction of a classroom teacher and specialists, including technical direction of a registered nurse, performs duties related to basic health care, meals, socialization, and developmentally appropriate activities for students who have acute or chronic health problems requiring daily ongoing care or monitoring by trained personnel. Assists certificated staff in reinforcing instructional activities to students who are medically fragile and/or non‑ambulatory either individually or in small groups according to prescribed learning objectives. Performs other related duties as required. Distinguishing Characteristics The Instructional Assistant – Medically Fragile/Orthopedically Impaired classification is distinguished from other instructional assistant positions by the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to integrate specialized health care services in an instructional setting. Incumbents perform essential health care tasks such as monitoring bodily functions, recognizing and reporting changes in conditions, and performing routine, repetitive, ongoing health care procedures that do not require the professional judgment of a registered nurse. Minimum Qualifications Education High school graduation plus either: At least two years of study (48 semester units or 60 quarter units) at a higher education institution. Attainment of an Associate of Arts degree or higher. Passing score on a Personnel Commission exam demonstrating knowledge and ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics. Experience One year of experience providing health care services in a school, hospital, skilled nursing, extended care, or other similar care environment. Current enrollment in an approved nursing program may substitute for one year of experience. Experience working with children and individuals with severe physical disabilities is desirable. Licenses and Other Requirements Valid CPR and First Aid certificate at time of application and throughout employment (online‑only certificates are not acceptable). Conditions of employment: successful completion of a pre‑employment physical examination. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of Strategies and techniques for assisting in the instruction of medically fragile or mobility‑impaired students. Supervision and motivation of medically fragile and/or mobility‑impaired students. Child guidance principles for students who are medically fragile or have orthopedic impairments. Essential procedures related to health, safety, hygiene, and patient care. Body mechanics for transferring and providing personal care to non‑ambulatory students. Effective verbal and non‑verbal communication skills. Secondary‑level academic subjects taught in District schools. Emergency crisis management techniques. English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. Record‑keeping and report preparation techniques. Appropriate safety precautions and hygiene standards. Health and safety regulations. First Aid/CPR procedures. Skill to Supervise and instruct medically fragile and/or orthopedically impaired students in a school environment. Adapt to new procedures and conditions. Tutor students with special learning needs. Perform essential health care and personal hygiene tasks for medically fragile students. Operate one or more pieces of medical equipment. Provide specialized health care services as directed. Assist students with dressing and toileting. Recognize and respond to emergency conditions. Follow safety procedures and universal precautions. Transfer, position, and assist in ambulation of medically fragile students. Perform physically demanding tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs unassisted, and over 50 lbs with assistance. Perform First Aid and CPR. Ability to Maintain emotional control in difficult situations. Work as a team. Organize daily tasks. Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and staff. Demonstrate a patient, warm, receptive attitude toward students with severe needs. Document and maintain accurate daily written records. Perform accurate mathematical calculations. Communicate clearly and concisely. Maintain confidentiality of student records. Perform routine clerical support duties. Operate standard classroom equipment, telephones, and computers. Physical Demands Stand for long periods, run or walk long distances or quickly over short distances, sit, kneel, stoop, lift and carry up to 50 lbs unassisted (over 50 lbs with assistance), use both hands and legs simultaneously, reach overhead, twist or apply pressure with wrists, maintain coordination, balance, depth perception, clear speech, normal hearing, and use telephone and computer. Work Environment Inside and outside, in a multiple or single classroom environment; direct contact with students, staff, and public; exposure to foul odors, loud noise, bodily fluids, contagious illnesses; wear gloves; interactions with irate students or parents; continuous interruptions and changing priorities. General Essential Duties Medical/Health Assistance Perform specialized health care procedures under RN supervision: suctioning-oral and tracheal, gastrostomy tube feeding, catheterization, colostomy and ileostomy care, oxygen administration, personal hygiene care, feeding, seizure monitoring, diabetes monitoring, health awareness, and first aid/CPR as needed. Inspect medical equipment, perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance, maintain logs of administered procedures. Student Safety/Mobility Use universal precautions, assist with adaptive equipment, train and participate in workshops on special education and emergency management. Assist students with bus transfers, wheelchairs, and orthopedic equipment, using proper lifting techniques or mechanical lifts when necessary. Monitor students in various school settings, accompany medically fragile students on the bus, assist with severe behaviors, respond to emergencies. Classroom/Staff Support Assistance in instruction for students with acute or chronic health problems across cognitive, gross and fine motor, feeding, self‑help, and social skills. Follow daily instructional schedule, perform housekeeping duties, disinfect equipment, sanitize laundry and dishes. Maintain professional rapport, communicate with certificated staff and support personnel, and keep confidentiality of student records.
