Respiratory Therapist - Sign-on Bonus

Job Description Sign-On Bonus: $25,000 for a 3-year commitment. Pay: $33 - $50.50 per hour, based on experience. Direct Hire. Competitive Salary: based on experience. Exceptional benefits package. Full-time. Shift: Evening (72 hours per pay period). Location: Elmira, NY, Finger Lakes Region of New York State. Main Function Provide respiratory care services in accordance with physician orders, departmental protocols and policies and procedures under the supervision of the System Director or designated charge therapist. Duties and Responsibilities Technical Skills Maintain knowledge of various methods of oxygen delivery and associated equipment. Adjust delivery devices specific to patient age and condition and assess side effects. Implement and document respiratory care needs for patients after discharge. Administer respiratory therapy treatments via various modalities for medication delivery, volume expansion and bronchial hygiene specific to patient age under departmental protocols. Initiate, maintain and discontinue mechanical ventilators, both invasive and non-invasive; perform associated procedures such as airway management and suctioning. Perform arterial and capillary blood sampling, label and transport specimens for analysis. Analyze blood gas specimens; follow procedure for critical values including action, notification and documentation; troubleshoot blood gas analyzers. Perform pulmonary function testing per ATS guidelines. Prepare patient and equipment for bronchoscopy, assist physician, process and transport specimens post-procedure and complete post-procedure duties; maintain acceptable physician performance rating. Obtain 12-lead EKG of good quality and complete associated documentation. Perform functional check on patient’s own respiratory therapy equipment (CPAP, BiPAP) and document. Deliver oxygen tanks throughout the facility, return empty tanks, clean and process non-disposable respiratory therapy equipment, and replenish equipment as needed. Obtain nasal specimens for influenza A, Bordetella pertussis, and RSV testing, transport to laboratory, and complete documentation. Patients Rights Knowledgeable of and follow patients rights. Maintain confidentiality; access only necessary patient information. Follow health policy for patient identification before administering medications, treatments, procedures, or sampling blood. Problem Solving / Decision Making Organize and prioritize workload; function as part of the team. Maintain composure during crisis situations and respond appropriately. Assess patient for respiratory therapy needs, educational needs, and pain level; develop and document a plan of care and implement changes when appropriate. Resolve conflicts effectively. Identify problems and provide solutions. Professionalism Conduct self professionally with all customers; dress appropriately. Document all pertinent information accurately in the patient chart and charges per appropriate time documentation. Explain purpose and procedure of treatments, tests, and equipment to patients and families professionally. Follow attendance and punctuality policies. Attend mandatory in-services and department meetings; assume responsibility for information shared. Assume responsibility for own actions. Assist learning needs of students (Respiratory Therapy, Nursing, Paramedic) and orient new employees as appropriate. Assume role of charge therapist when assigned and complete duties; delegate tasks and responsibilities fairly. Risk Management & Quality Improvement Demonstrate awareness and application of safety issues; adhere to infection control, universal precautions, safety policies, and respiratory therapy protocols; use PPE appropriately. Participate in quality improvement activities and apply principles in daily work. Identify opportunities for improvement in communication and working relationships and implement methods. Other Attend all annual mandatory educational programs. Understand and demonstrate importance of satisfying customer/patient needs by interacting friendly and caring, being attentive to psychological and physical needs, and maintaining communication for secure and pleasant experience. Education Licensed as a Respiratory Therapist by the State of New York or eligible. Credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist by the NBRC or eligible within 12 months of obtaining the NYS Technician License. Experience One year recent experience as a Respiratory Therapist preferred. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Requirements Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within 1 year of hire date.
