Position Summary

This position is responsible for functioning as both a caregiver and care manager. In the caregiver role, the Registered Nurse (RN) assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame, implementing the Nursing Process. In the role of care manager, the RN directs and oversees the work of other caregivers (nurses and non-nurses) through delegation, coordination, supervision, and evaluation of patient care outcomes. The individual in this position will need to fully understand the purpose and operation of Patient Care Services and possess sound judgment in decision-making when situations arise.

Essential Functions

• Perform assessment and data collection focused on physiological, psychosocial, and cognitive status.
• Implement care knowledgeably and skillfully, adhering to predetermined procedures, policies, and care plans.
• Identify patient and significant other learning needs, assess readiness for learning, and implement patient teaching as defined by policy and care plans.
• Document patient information in charts using electronic medical record systems and paper processes per policy and regulatory requirements.
• Show awareness of and sensitivity to patient and family rights, ensuring equitable treatment regardless of classification protected by law.
• Effectively delegate patient care activities and supervise assigned coworkers.
• Utilize effective organization and priority setting through sound critical thinking.
• Demonstrate appropriate use of lines of authority.
• Function as a Charge Nurse, including delegating patient assignments, assisting with admissions and discharges, coordinating staff coverage, and leading problem-solving efforts within the unit.
• Maintain professional growth through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to stay updated on trends in the field.
• Ensure compliance with safety requirements, including infection control, fire safety, and safe lifting techniques.
• Adhere to organization policies, procedures, and labor agreements.
• Conduct interactions with team members and support groups in a courteous and efficient manner aligned with organizational values.
• Exhibit professionalism and maintain a personal appearance that meets organizational standards.
• Address any additional responsibilities as assigned by management.

Work Environment

This position reports to the Nursing Department Director, House Supervisor, Charge Nurse, and other designated supervisory staff. The RN will work closely with patients, physicians, and other clinicians to ensure optimal patient care and outcomes.

Education & Experience

• Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
• License: Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in Washington State.
• Certification: Healthcare Provider (HCP) level of Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire (AHA or equivalent).
• Experience: Preferred experience in acute care nursing (minimum one year for specialty departments).

  • Familiarity with the equipment listed on the department-specific checklist.

Physical Requirements

• Frequent standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
• Manual dexterity to handle equipment and perform patient care tasks for extended periods.
• Physical strength to perform CPR and lift/push patients as needed.
• Keen mental faculties for assessment and decision-making in acute patient management.
• Good reading vision for patient assessment and documentation tools.
• Emotional stability to manage high-stress situations over extended periods.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, for accurate information exchange.

Family Birthing Unit Requirements

• Advanced Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required for all RNs in MBU before
