Two Full-Time Academic Advisor Opportunities
Gateway is hiring two Academic Advisors through this posting: one position based at the Kenosha Campus and one position based at the Racine Campus. Candidates interested in either campus opportunity are encouraged to apply.
The Role in Brief
The Academic Advisor supports student success by providing comprehensive academic advising, educational planning, and individualized guidance throughout the student journey from enrollment through completion.
You will help students understand program requirements, develop academic plans, navigate institutional processes, and connect with resources that support their academic, personal, transfer, and career goals.
Through proactive relationship-building, case management, problem-solving, and collaboration with faculty and campus partners, you will identify and address barriers to student success, promote informed decision-making, and support persistence, retention, and completion.

What You Will Actually Do
Service & Relationship Management | 45%
- Provide comprehensive academic advising regarding programs of study, degree requirements, course sequencing, scheduling, transfer opportunities, career pathways, and strategies for successful completion.
- Develop individualized academic plans that align students' educational goals, program requirements, academic progress, and career objectives.
- Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with assigned student populations through individual appointments, group advising, outreach activities, and proactive communication.
- Help students navigate college processes, policies, and resources through clear information, referrals, and connections to appropriate campus and community services.
- Monitor student progress and provide proactive outreach, intervention, and case management support to students experiencing academic, personal, or enrollment barriers.
- Collaborate with faculty, academic leadership, Student Success teams, Financial Aid, Career Services, Registrar, and other campus partners to provide coordinated student support.
- Promote student advocacy, self-awareness, and informed decision-making by helping students understand their options, responsibilities, and potential outcomes.
Critical Thinking & Decision-Making | 20%
- Analyze student academic records, goals, circumstances, and challenges to provide informed academic-planning and student-success recommendations.
- Interpret and apply institutional policies, procedures, academic requirements, transfer guidelines, and graduation standards.
- Evaluate academic barriers, registration challenges, and student concerns to identify appropriate solutions while balancing student needs with institutional requirements.
- Assess student progress and determine appropriate outreach, intervention, referrals, or support strategies.
- Collaborate with faculty, administrators, and campus partners to address complex student situations and recommend improvements to advising practices.
- Exercise sound judgment when handling confidential student information in accordance with FERPA and institutional expectations.
Operational Execution & Administration | 20%
- Maintain accurate documentation of student interactions, academic plans, outreach efforts, referrals, and advising activities within designated systems.
- Review student records, transcripts, placement information, academic progress, and program requirements to support effective advising and enrollment planning.
- Use advising technologies, student information systems, CRM platforms, and other tools to track student progress, document interactions, and support retention initiatives.
- Manage student appointments, calendars, outreach activities, and administrative processes supporting accessible and responsive advising services.
- Maintain current knowledge of assigned academic programs, admission requirements, curriculum changes, transfer agreements, and institutional resources.
- Support enrollment initiatives, registration activities, orientations, student events, and other activities that promote student access and success.
Planning, Coordination & Continuous Improvement | 10%
- Participate in department initiatives, student success projects, enrollment campaigns, and process-improvement activities supporting institutional priorities.
- Collaborate with academic departments and student service areas on initiatives designed to improve advising practices, student engagement, and completion outcomes.
- Participate in committees, advisory groups, and cross-functional teams supporting communication, coordination, and continuous improvement.
- Support implementation of new advising practices, technologies, processes, and student-success initiatives.
Additional Responsibilities | 5%
- Participate in professional development to maintain knowledge of advising practices, student success strategies, institutional policies, and higher education trends.
- Support training and mentoring of peer advisors, student employees, or other assigned support resources as applicable.
- Participate in college events, committees, and special projects supporting student success and institutional priorities.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of departmental and institutional operations.
What You Need to Succeed
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Science, Social Services, or a related field.
- Two years of higher education experience providing academic advising, student support services, case management, counseling, or related services.
- Demonstrated experience supporting individuals through goal setting, planning, problem-solving, and connecting individuals to appropriate resources or services.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate documentation, and build effective relationships with diverse populations.
- Ability to interpret policies, procedures, and requirements while exercising sound judgment and providing accurate guidance.
Conditions of Employment
Work Authorization: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available.
Background Check: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
Schedule: Flexibility is required to work day, evening, and weekend hours based on operational, event, and student needs. At minimum, one evening shift is required each week.
Travel: Travel is required across Gateway campus locations and to external partner sites, including high schools, community organizations, and business or industry partners, to support operational, event, and student needs.
Transportation: Reliable transportation is required.
