Sleep Medicine Physician

Position summary. Provide virtual sleep medicine care to Veterans assigned by the VA. The physician will evaluate and manage sleep disorders and related conditions through synchronous telehealth, telephone visits, electronic consultations, sleep-study interpretation, and remote therapeutic monitoring. Physicians may reside anywhere in the United States and will support patients in jurisdictions where they hold an eligible medical license. Primary Responsibilities • Evaluate new and established patients by video or telephone; obtain relevant history, perform clinically appropriate remote examinations, and complete required suicide-risk screening for new patients. • Diagnose and manage sleep disorders and associated conditions, using sleepiness, insomnia, and other validated questionnaires when clinically relevant. • Determine the need for sleep testing, select the appropriate study, place orders, track completion, and respond to scheduling or order-modification requests. • Review raw sleep-study data and the medical record; interpret assigned studies within seven calendar days and communicate results to the referring clinician and Veteran within 14 calendar days. • Provide electronic consultations and medical decision-making based on chart review, and monitor sleep-related devices remotely using the appropriate clinical documentation and billing codes. • Complete Somnoware chart reviews and patient-safety audits, update study status, document follow-up actions, and maintain required audit tracking. • Document care directly in the VA electronic health record, generally within 24 hours, and coordinate treatment with referring providers and the multidisciplinary sleep team. • Participate in weekly team huddles, monthly quality meetings, required training, and timely QA/QI and patient-safety reporting. Schedule and Remote Work Expectations • Assignments may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, or weekends within 6:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. in the patient's local U.S. time zone. No call or overtime is authorized. • New-patient appointments are expected within 60 minutes and follow-up appointments within 30 minutes. The physician must remain reachable by phone, email, and Microsoft Teams during assigned hours. • Maintain a reliable internet connection and private, VA-compliant workspace. The VA supplies a laptop, docking station, two monitors, camera, and PIV reader. Minimum Qualifications • MD or DO with Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Sleep Medicine through an American Board of Medical Specialties member board. • Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in each U.S. jurisdiction where assigned Veterans reside. The solicitation excludes physicians who currently have or have ever had a license restricted, suspended, revoked, voluntarily revoked, voluntarily surrendered pending action, or denied upon application. • Current Basic Life Support certification or accepted equivalent, active Drug Enforcement Administration certificate, and National Provider Identifier. • Ability to obtain and maintain VA credentialing and clinical privileges before providing patient care, with current CME and complete, verifiable education and training history. • Fluency in spoken and written English; strong clinical documentation, communication, and care-coordination skills. • Technical proficiency with personal computers, Windows-based applications, virtual-care platforms, secure messaging, and direct entry of clinical notes in an electronic health record. • Ability to meet federal work-authorization, occupational-health, privacy/security, training, and screening requirements and remain eligible to participate in federal health care programs. Preferred Background • Multiple active state licenses. Priority jurisdictions include Florida, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, and California. • Prior VA experience, particularly with VistA and/or Oracle Health electronic health records, VA Somnoware, and VA virtual-care platforms. • Experience delivering high-volume virtual specialty care and collaborating effectively within an interprofessional sleep-medicine team. Credentialing and Compliance Selected physicians must promptly provide documentation supporting licensure, board status, BLS, DEA, NPI, CME, education, training, and health-clearance requirements. Required health documentation includes current tuberculosis screening and evidence of specified immunity/vaccination and bloodborne-pathogen compliance. Annual and assignment-specific VA training including EHR, telehealth, privacy, security, ethics, suicide prevention, and telework training must be completed as directed.
