Case Western Reserve University: STUDENT EMPLOYMENT: Case School of Engineering (STUDENT) Location On-Site (Kent Hale Smith) Open Date Aug 19, 2026 Description Transforming Thermoset Waste into Reprocessable Materials Thermosets are widely used in automotive components, electronics, adhesives, and composites. However, their permanently crosslinked networks prevent melting and reprocessing, making recycling challenging. Our group is developing vitrimerization , an innovative technology that transforms crosslinked thermosets into reprocessable materials with dynamic, exchangeable networks. These materials retain the stability and mechanical properties of conventional thermosets while enabling reshaping and reprocessing at elevated temperatures. Our research spans multiple polymer systems and includes academic and industry-supported projects. We are seeking motivated co-op students to contribute to research in polymer recycling, vitrimerization, sustainable materials, and polymer processing. Students will receive hands-on training and work with graduate students and researchers. Responsibilities include polymer sample preparation and processing, laboratory equipment operation, materials characterization, data analysis, literature review, and experimental documentation. Students will gain experience with polymer processing and mechanical, thermal, rheological, and spectroscopic characterization while developing skills in experimental design, troubleshooting, data analysis, and technical communication. Opportunities may also be available to contribute to publications and patent applications. The salary for this position is $20/hour. Qualifications We are looking for students who: Are enrolled in Polymer Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Have a strong academic record and interest in experimental research and sustainable materials. Are detail-oriented, reliable, organized, and able to document experimental work carefully. Are willing to learn new laboratory techniques and equipment. Can work effectively independently and as part of a research team. Previous polymer research experience is helpful but not required.
