Program / Unit DescriptionThe Division of Infectious Diseases & International Medicine at the University of Minnesota is a globally recognized leader in clinical research and implementation science focused on advanced HIV disease, tuberculosis, and fungal infections. The division maintains longstanding research collaborations in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Kampala and Mbarara, Uganda, with a strong track record of NIH-funded clinical trials and global health impact.Position OverviewThe University seeks a highly motivated physician-scientist to join a multidisciplinary research team focused on advanced HIV disease and opportunistic infections. This position emphasizes independent and collaborative clinical research, with opportunities for career development toward NIH funding and academic advancement.This role includes a combination of research, clinical care, and international fieldwork, with a strong expectation of sustained scholarly productivity and leadership in global infectious diseases.Required QualificationsMD or DO degreeCompletion of an ABIM-accredited Infectious Diseases fellowshipFormal training in global health (e.g., Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene) or equivalent international field experienceDemonstrated ability to conduct clinical trials research, including prior leadership roles with first- or senior-author publication(s)Willingness and ability to work part-time in Kampala, Uganda, supporting international clinical research programsPreferred QualificationsNIH career development award (e.g., K23) submitted, pending, or fundedActive or eligible for Minnesota medical licensureExperience conducting clinical trials in resource-limited settingsTrack record of grant writing and external funding applicationsExperience mentoring trainees (students, residents, fellows)Duties and ResponsibilitiesResearch (75%)Lead and contribute to NIH-funded clinical trials and observational studies focused on advanced HIV disease and opportunistic infectionsOversee study design, regulatory compliance, and implementation across U.S. and international sitesSupervise and mentor trainees, research staff, and collaboratorsDevelop independent research projects aligned with division prioritiesDisseminate findings through peer-reviewed publications and scientific presentationsContribute to grant writing and development of future funding proposalsClinical (25%)Provide inpatient infectious diseases consultation at the University of Minnesota Medical CenterParticipate in teaching of medical students, residents, and fellowsMaintain clinical excellence in the diagnosis and management of complex infectious diseasesAdditional InformationThis position involves international collaboration and periodic travel to UgandaThe University of Minnesota is committed to fostering an academic environment that supports career development, innovation, and global impactApplicants of all nationalities are encouraged to applyPay and Benefits:This role is dually employed by University of Minnesota Physicians and the University of Minnesota. Total salary is market competitive and based on AAMC salary benchmarks. Clinical salary, aligned with clinical effort, is provided through M Physicians. The base salary range for this position is $170,000 - $205,000 commensurate with experience, qualifications, and cFTE.
