Compensation: Full-time, salaried, exempt position. Salary range: 80-90K. Pay rate will be determined in part depending on years of experience related to essential duties and responsibilities. Some responsibilities may occur outside of normal business hours. Organizational Description
The San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium (SF DVC) is an advocacy and public policy association of 17 community-based nonprofit and governmental organizations dedicated to ending domestic violence and supporting survivors in San Francisco, California. Since 1982, the SF DVC has provided a unique contribution to San Francisco by supporting service providers while raising the awareness of elected officials, policymakers and the broader community on how policy decisions affect San Francisco's comprehensive community of survivors and direct service providers. The San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium is a fiscally sponsored project of the Tides Center. The Executive Director is currently the only staff member of the SF DVC and is employed by the Tides Center.
Position Summary
The Executive Director is responsible for promoting and sustaining the mission of the San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium. The position is best filled by a dynamic and collaborative leader who engages community-based nonprofit organizations, City Supervisors and Departments, courts, media, and more to advance San Francisco’s commitment to all survivors and victims of domestic violence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Program Leadership , including developing and implementing public policy and advocacy strategies in alignment with the needs of its member nonprofit and government domestic violence service-providing organizations. This includes representing the organization by speaking at City Hall, building alliances with SF Supervisors and City Departments and Commissions, coordinating trainings on DV issues and resources for relevant entities including the San Francisco Police and Probation Departments, BIPs and 911 dispatchers, coordinating court presence especially for domestic violence homicide cases that are not connected to a specific service organization, and ensuring that the domestic violence community strongly reflected in City budget priorities.
- Landscape Monitoring, including monitoring City budget, policy, and legislative developments as well as policy makers, partner coalitions and other allies, media voices, confirmed or potential instances of domestic violence injury or homicide in the City and responses to them, and more.
- Membership Management, including maintaining excellent and regular communication with member organizations, sustaining positive member onboarding, engagement, and recruitment of relevant potential members.
- Development , including managing all fundraising activities, including annual membership dues, some grant development, and other fundraising and resource-building projects.
- Communications , including promoting visibility and credibility of the organization through regular communication and outreach, partner development, press, and social media presence. This includes creating effective representations of data that are reflective of the positive impact.
- Organizational Administration , including coordinating with the DVC Steering and Finance Committees and the Tides Center regarding budget and finance, insurance, HR, data and reporting, and overseeing organizational systems.
- Personnel Management: Currently, the Executive Director is the only SF DVC staff, but the DVC may take on interns or volunteers, and/or hire additional staff as funding allows. In those cases, the Executive Director will be responsible for supervising them.
Qualifications Summary:
The ideal candidate should have a demonstrated commitment to ending domestic violence, promoting collaborative advocacy efforts through nonprofit and government sectors, and advocating for frontline safety net providers of services to survivors, their families, and vulnerable San Francisco residents. They exhibit excellent and effective communication in all work settings and reflect the strength and courage of the San Francisco domestic violence community.
Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated commitment to the SF DVC’s vision and philosophy;
- Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience including at least 2 years of experience in public policy, advocacy, and/or organizing and 3 years of experience addressing gender-based violence;
- Bachelor's degree or mix of post-secondary education and relevant work experience;
- Post-baccalaureate education in areas such as nonprofit management, law, public policy or social work, with specific job experience considered in lieu of education;
- Experience working equitably and effectively with racially, linguistically, ethnically and gender diverse constituencies;
- Experience in health and human services nonprofits with government contracts and funding;
- Experience managing projects from idea creation to development and implementation, including planning, funding, implementation, and evaluation;
- Ability to think creatively and strategically about the broad goals of the SF DVC, while remaining detail-oriented and exact in work product;
- Demonstrated success in leadership, relationship-building, and collaboration building within and across nonprofit, government, funder, media, and community circles;
- Demonstrated ability to understand, assess and explain complex public policy proposals and legislation verbally and in writing;
- Demonstrated success in fundraising;
- Demonstrated success in budget management;
- Highly organized and able to work under pressure, prioritize multiple assignments, and consistently meet deadlines; and
- The work of the organization includes frequent information-sharing and discussion not just about healing and support, but also about abuse, trauma, violence and systemic oppression. Must be comfortable engaging in conversation about these topics with others. Must be able to discuss these topics in a way that supports trust-building, effective communication, and teamwork.
Minimum Qualifications
- Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents in English, such as agendas, safety rules, legislative bills, and procedure manuals. Ability to write effective reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to groups and to Limited English Proficiency individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as totals, discounts, interest, proportions, and percentages.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and navigate a variety of variables, in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Computer Skills: Knowledge of and ability to perform using Internet software (Chrome, Safari), Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), Google Suite (Gmail, Google Calendar, Docs, etc.), databases, and remote collaboration tools (Zoom, Docusign, etc.). Knowledge of basic office equipment should include: Internet and email, copy and fax machines, telephone and smartphone.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations :
- Documentation of completed California Domestic Violence Counselor Training that meets state requirements for Domestic Violence Counselor Privilege. If training requirements need to be met post-hire, they need to be met within the first three months of employment.
- A valid California driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance OR ability to use public transportation and/or ride shares for all work travel. A motor vehicle report will be run and checked as a condition of employment.
- Because the position works with vulnerable populations including possible contact with people under 18, another condition of employment is a cleared background check and LiveScan fingerprinting report.
Other Qualifications
- Must be available to work occasional evenings and weekend days.
- Must have demonstrated knowledge and skill related to trauma responsiveness, self-regulation, and effective navigation of emotional intensity and stress.
Physical Requirements
- The work environment includes settings of an office and government and community meeting spaces. The noise level in these settings is often noisy.
- This position engages in on-site work that requires time spent sitting, standing, walking up and down stairs, driving, transporting items – which may include lifting or moving items up to 20 pounds, with at least two or more hours each day spent sitting, looking at a screen, using a computer and keyboard, phone, and/or video conferencing.
