Registered Nurse - Pre Anesthesia Testing

Summary Reporting to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse coordinates and delivers patient care using the nursing process in both outpatient and hospital settings. Responsibilities Assess patients in the outpatient clinic or via phone interview to prepare them for anesthesia and surgery, including medical and surgical history, current medications, allergies, lab result review/ordering, and anesthesia risk evaluation. Follow Peri‑Anesthesia Testing Guidelines and surgeon orders; perform physical assessments for in‐person clinic patients, including vital signs and weight. Develop and implement patient care plans, consult, or review medical clearance in coordination with surgeons, anesthesia, and other team members. Educate patients and families on procedure preparation, NPO status, medication instructions, arrival times, postoperative support, emotional support, and preventive care such as screenings, nutrition, and exercise. Collaborate with cardiologists, pulmonologists, primary care physicians, and other healthcare professionals; advocate for preventive care measures. Maintain accurate and detailed records of patients’ medical histories, medications, treatments, progress, and ensure confidentiality. Adhere to hospital safety policies and protocols, comply with healthcare laws and regulations, stay updated on nursing care advancements, and attend required professional development sessions. Advocate for patients’ rights and needs, address complaints or concerns, and, when necessary, elevate issues to management. Administer patient care under physician direction and identify expected outcomes with the interdisciplinary care team. Provide competent clinical nursing care consistent with organizational standards and policies. Organize and prioritize care based on patient/family needs; consult resources promptly for complex cases and high‑risk discharge planning. Collaborate with clinical peers and foster intra‑ and inter‑departmental communication. Synthesize data from complex situations to determine priorities for physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs, and assess discharge needs. Communicate effectively with patients and families, using cultural competency and active listening, and develop relationships that empower advocacy for patient and family needs. Develop clinical and operational excellence through ongoing education and training. Promote a safe, clean, and secure hospital environment, applying standard precautions and infection‑control principles. Qualifications Registered Nurse license in North Carolina (or one of the compact states) issued prior to the first day of clinical care. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Graduate of an accredited nursing school. Relevant clinical certifications as required for the clinical area. Preferred Qualifications 2–3 years of experience in a related clinical setting.
