ELECTRICAL ESTIMATOR (UL 508A)

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Electrical Estimator is responsible for reviewing customer drawings, specifications, one-lines, panel schedules, and equipment requirements to develop accurate material and labor estimates for custom electrical equipment manufactured by 5K Power. 

The ideal candidate has direct experience estimating, designing, engineering, or manufacturing UL 508A industrial control panels and similar low-voltage electrical assemblies. This role requires the ability to take a customer concept, specification, or electrical drawing and determine the components, enclosure, fabrication, wiring, labor, testing, and engineering effort required to manufacture the finished product. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Estimating & Quotation 

• Review customer RFQs, specifications, one-line diagrams, schematics, panel schedules, equipment layouts, and drawings. 

• Develop detailed estimates for custom electrical panels and power distribution equipment. 

• Generate accurate Bills of Material (BOMs) for proposed equipment. 

• Determine material, fabrication, assembly, wiring, testing, engineering, and production labor requirements. 

• Obtain vendor pricing and evaluate component availability and lead times. 

• Identify cost-effective component alternatives while maintaining required electrical ratings and customer specifications. 

• Develop complete project pricing for management review and customer quotation. 

• Maintain estimating history and improve estimating standards based on actual production costs. 

UL 508A / Electrical Equipment 

• Interpret and apply UL 508A requirements during the estimating and design process. 

• Understand component selection and application within UL-listed assemblies. 

• Evaluate voltage, amperage, SCCR, interrupting ratings, conductor sizing, overcurrent protection, disconnecting means, control power, and related electrical requirements. 

• Understand proper application of breakers, fused disconnects, contactors, motor starters, relays, power supplies, transformers, terminal blocks, VFDs, PLCs, and other common panel components. 

• Assist in identifying UL-compliant component substitutions when specified products are unavailable or create excessive lead times. 

• Work with engineering and production personnel to ensure estimated designs can be manufactured efficiently and in compliance with applicable requirements. 

Design & Preconstruction Support 

• Assist with preliminary panel layouts and equipment configurations during the estimating process. 

• Review enclosure sizing and determine appropriate NEMA enclosure requirements. 

• Evaluate electrical and mechanical space requirements for components. 

• Identify potential design conflicts or missing information before equipment enters production. 

• Develop conceptual equipment arrangements when customers provide incomplete designs. 

• Support design-build opportunities where 5K Power is responsible for developing the equipment solution from customer requirements. 

Vendor & Supply Chain Coordination 

• Request and evaluate quotations from electrical equipment and component manufacturers. 

• Maintain working knowledge of major electrical manufacturers and equivalent product families. 

• Monitor component pricing, availability, and lead times. 

• Develop alternate sourcing strategies when specified components create schedule or cost issues. 

EQUIPMENT EXPERIENCE 

Experience estimating or designing one or more of the following is strongly preferred: 

• UL 508A Industrial Control Panels (Required) 

• Custom Electrical Control Panels 

• Power Distribution Panels 

• Panelboards and Disconnect Assemblies 

• Motor Control Panels 

• PLC / Automation Panels 

• VFD Panels 

• Transformer / Distribution Assemblies 

• Temporary Power Distribution Equipment 

• Metering Assemblies 

• Custom NEMA 1 / NEMA 3R Electrical Enclosures 

• Skid-Mounted Electrical Equipment 

• Switchboard or similar low-voltage distribution equipment 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

• 3+ years of experience in electrical equipment estimating, panel design, electrical manufacturing, or a closely related field. 

• Working knowledge of UL 508A and industrial control panel construction. 

• Ability to read and interpret electrical one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel schedules, and specifications. 

• Strong understanding of electrical components and their applications. 

• Experience developing Bills of Material from drawings and customer requirements. 

• Ability to understand voltage, amperage, circuit protection, conductor sizing, and basic electrical calculations. 

• Ability to communicate effectively with customers, vendors, engineering personnel, and production teams. 

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 

• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, custom manufacturing environment where projects may vary significantly from one job to the next. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

• UL 508A Manufacturer Technical Representative (MTR) experience or similar UL panel-shop experience. 

• Experience working directly for a UL 508A panel shop or electrical equipment manufacturer. 

• Experience with AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD, SolidWorks Electrical, or similar electrical design software. 

• Experience estimating custom-built electrical equipment. 

• Familiarity with NEC requirements applicable to industrial control and power distribution equipment. 

• Experience with SCCR calculations and component selection. 

• Experience with Schneider Electric, Square D, Eaton, Siemens, ABB, Allen-Bradley, Phoenix Contact, or similar electrical manufacturers. 

• Experience working with ERP, estimating, or manufacturing BOM systems. 

• Field electrical experience is beneficial but not required. 

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE 

The successful candidate will be able to receive an RFQ containing a one-line, specification, customer sketch, or conceptual requirement and turn it into a buildable and profitable 5K Power solution.

• What should we sell it for? 

• Can we build and deliver it within the customer's required schedule? 

This role works closely with Sales, Engineering, Purchasing, and Production and plays an important role in ensuring projects are accurately priced before they reach the shop floor.
