Sheriff's Office-Investigations Detective SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs specialized law enforcement work in the investigation of crimes, narcotics trafficking, and related law enforcement problems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

Responds to, supervises, and investigates major crimes and participates in law enforcement activities; attends the scenes of crime to search for and preserve forensic and physical evidence Performs skilled investigative work involving alleged crimes against persons and property: conduct follow-up investigations as necessary. Assist the Detective Sergeant in all phases of law enforcement investigations (criminal, civil, or internal) either as a special investigation or on a day-to-day basis. Recover lost or stolen property; prepares reports and maintains records or work performed; maintains a variety of investigative and related files. Performs surveillance duty and patrols in civilian clothing: develops and maintains informative contacts. Performs undercover investigations as necessary. Works with; advises and receives advice; from all members of this department building a team environment within his division: works closely with other investigators within his department and relays information pertaining to possible or potential criminal investigations within the county. Works closely with other agencies within and outside the county. Performs liaison work between and with other law enforcement agencies in and out of the county. Performs on-the-job training to other investigators, sergeants and deputies while conducting investigations. Reviews other investigations within his division and makes suggestions and recommendations when necessary. Performs any other duties as assigned by a supervisor. Qualifications Experience/Education Three years of progressively responsible lawenforcement related experience Licenses and Certificates Possess valid Colorado Driver’s License withsatisfactory driving record POST certified in the State of Colorado Knowledge/Skills Knowledgeof to learn local, state and federal laws; city and county ordinances Knowledgeof first aid and medical procedures and practices Knowledgeof County geography and surrounding areas including roads, streets,landmarks, building and similar features Knowledgeof proper law enforcement principles, procedures and practice Knowledgeof practices and methods of criminal investigation and identification Knowledgeof and skill in use of law enforcement vehicles, fire arms and related lawenforcement equipment, and principles and practices of self-defense Abilityto make decisions in a timely manner under critical or stressfulsituations Abilityto understand and exchange verbal/written instruction or information andmaintain a calm demeanor during time of crisis and when dealing withpersons who may be hysterical, abusive, incoherent, intoxicated orexcited. Treadmill testing to 10 MET level Lumbar ROM Baseline Audiogram Drug Screen Abilityto read and review documents, reports and training materials Abilityto observe activities while on patrol and at crime scenes Abilityto use close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision anddepth perception Abilityto regularly talk and hear; communicate effectively in person, in writingand over a radio or via telephone Abilityto discuss situations and make presentations to the public and to testifyin court Physical Effort/Dexterity: Mustbe in a physical condition to be able to perform a high level of sustainedphysical activity Abilityto occasionally climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and tasteor smell Abilityto use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and to reach with hands and arms Abilityto restrain a suspect/prisoner Abilityto operate a computer keyboard and various types of computers Abilityto safely operate a vehicle Work Environment:The County is rural with paved and unpavedmountain roads.Environmental conditionsof the position may include exposure on an occasional basis to fumes, odors,gases, explosives and air/blood borne diseases.Work is frequently conducted outside in hot/cold temperatures andwet/dry conditions.Extreme wind, snowand ice conditions occur during winter months.There is moderate exposure to loud noises. Crime scene chain of command: First deputy on scene is in charge of that scene and iscommander of that crime scene until he relinquishes the scene to anotherdeputy, sergeant, investigator or superior officer. Any deputy, sergeant or investigator who takes commandof any crime scene will be responsible to bring that investigation to aconclusion consisting of the collection and preservation of evidence andthe responsibility of maintaining the record and submitting the entireinvestigative package to the District Attorney. If not prepared to take total control, don’t takecommand of a crime scene. Work Schedule:Work is performed on a 12-hour shiftschedule.
