This Phlebotomist II position focuses on performing high-quality specimen collection while supporting smooth laboratory operations in a fast-paced clinical environment. The role involves blood draws and other specimen collections, proper specimen handling and processing, accurate documentation, and active participation in troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement. This is a float position that requires flexibility to work across multiple locations and shifts while maintaining exceptional patient care and adherence to safety and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal specimens, using straight needles and butterfly needles as appropriate.
• Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Collect, label, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification and proper test ordering.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
• Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against physician scripts to ensure complete accuracy before processing.
• Package specimens for transport, following all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity.
• Store specimens at the required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
• Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
• Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations for improvements.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory procedures.
• Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain thorough documentation of all activities.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
• Attend and complete annual department trainings to stay current with procedures, regulations, and best practices.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.
• Support training activities at assigned sites, helping to onboard or guide team members as needed.
• Float between designated locations as assigned, maintaining consistent quality and service across sites.

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• High school diploma or GED.
• 2–4 years of overall work experience.
• Demonstrated proficiency in performing venipunctures using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Experience collecting, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens according to protocol.
• Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify test requisitions or computer labels against physician scripts.
• Strong attention to detail to maintain specimen integrity and ensure correct labeling and storage.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
• Ability to understand and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory protocols.
• Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Strong verbal communication skills to explain procedures and respond to telephone inquiries.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment and manage multiple tasks.

• Experience working in a float role or across multiple clinical locations.
• Comfort working independently and as part of a small team in varied site configurations.
• Strong customer service and patient-care orientation, with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously.
• Ability to participate in troubleshooting and workflow improvement initiatives.
• Willingness to attend ongoing department trainings and adapt to updated procedures and protocols.
• Reliable transportation and flexibility to travel between assigned locations as needed.

This is a float position that supports multiple locations, including Bayshore, Babylon, Hicksville, Commack, Amityville, and Wantagh. The primary schedule includes a Tuesday through Saturday shift from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Additional scheduling details may include working Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for 8-hour shifts with start times typically between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., ending between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Saturday hours are generally from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., most often at the Babylon location. During the week, training may primarily occur at Amityville, Babylon, or Wantagh. Amityville operates as a 1.5-person site, meaning two team members work together in the morning, and one team member remains after lunch. The environment is a fast-paced clinical and laboratory setting where staff handle blood and other biological specimens, use centrifuges and standard phlebotomy equipment, and follow strict safety, regulatory, and specimen-handling protocols. Team members should expect to follow professional clinical attire guidelines appropriate for a patient-facing laboratory environment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Amityville, NY.

The pay range for this position is $25.16 - $25.16/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Amityville,NY.
