Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical Surgical / Short Stay Unit

Location

Schedule / Job Type

Contract | Days (07:00–19:30) | Onsite | 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule | Holiday rotation required

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care in a fast-paced Short Stay Unit managing a high-turnover patient population including stroke, trauma, cardiac, and general medical diagnoses (e.g., UTI, COPD, cellulitis)
• Maintain a 1:5 nurse-to-patient ratio within a 13-bed unit, collaborating with PCTs and a 24/7 Charge RN and House Supervisor
• Monitor patients on Philips house-wide telemetry system; RNs are not required to independently read EKG strips
• Manage patients requiring BiPAP, CPAP, and high-flow oxygen as ordered; drip titration is not required on this unit
• Float to other departments as needed; travelers are first to float, with a team nursing approach applied when floated to higher acuity areas
• Adhere to facility drug-free campus policy, including compliance with required drug screening

Required Qualifications

• Active Illinois RN license (or confirmation that the application process has been initiated)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required
• General medical/surgical nursing experience required
• Candidates must be able to produce a negative drug screen prior to placement
• Must live more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible at the standard rate; candidates within 50 miles are subject to a local rate adjustment

Preferred Experience / Skills

• Experience in a short stay, observation, or high-turnover med/surg environment
• Familiarity with stroke, cardiac, and trauma patient populations
• Comfort working with BiPAP, CPAP, and high-flow oxygen equipment
