Emergency Room (Full-time, Day Shift) *May be eligible for $9,000 sign-on bonus Job Summary The Clinical Nurse B – Emergency Department (ED) functions in the emergency department licensed under Loma Linda University Medical Center‑Murrieta (LUMC‑Murrieta), a designated ST‑Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) receiving center. Performs the nursing process (assessment, care planning, intervention, evaluation) with minimal supervision in a fast‑paced environment that treats a culturally diverse patient population presenting with a variety of illnesses, diseases, and both minor and major injuries. Rapidly assesses and stabilizes patients with life‑threatening situations, exhibits solid decision‑making skills, utilizes discretion and independent judgment to prioritize, coordinate, provide, and document direct and indirect age‑specific, developmentally appropriate, quality patient‑centered care in accordance with LUMC‑Murrieta’s established Professional Practice Model (Duffy’s Quality Caring Theory). Makes sound decisions, multitasks, balances, and prioritizes each patient’s needs, treats accordingly, demonstrates flexibility, manages multiple cases simultaneously, and prioritizes continuously. Works collaboratively with physicians from multiple service lines and assists with common and complex procedures after orientation and competency training. Displays confidence in dealing with community emergency situations, catastrophic incidents, and mass casualties. Receives patients from first responders via land and air ambulances, during mass casualties, and walk‑in patients seeking care. Implements standing orders appropriately, handles unexpected situations calmly and with confidence, and understands the significance of each role of the multidisciplinary team in providing optimum care to the emergency patient, including pre‑hospital care providers, law enforcement agency staff, chaplains, social workers, case managers, multiple physician services and consult staff, licensed and unlicensed care providers, triage nurses. Demonstrates basic knowledge of agencies governing emergency and trauma services, e.g., EMTALA, local EMS agencies, Riverside EMS Agency (REMSA), State Emergency Medical Services Authorities (EMSA), and state and federal hospital regulations. Applies theoretical concepts to clinical practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus on emergency medicine. Contributes to nursing excellence and embraces new knowledge, innovations, and improvements in practice to enhance the patient experience and clinical outcomes. Exhibits interpersonal skills to maximize patient satisfaction, safe patient care and professionalism. Functions in a skills‑mix environment and directly supervises and delegates tasks to licensed and unlicensed staff. Meets qualifications, licensure, certifications, and competencies as defined in the department‑specific Plan for Providing Care. Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Performs other duties as needed. Education and Experience Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) required. Minimum of one year experience required. CN‑B’s are eligible to be promoted into the CN‑C classification when criteria outlined in the Clinical Nurse Ladder handbook and job specifications outlined in the CN‑C job description are met. Knowledge and Skills Demonstrates basic competencies in clinical nursing. Ability to apply theoretical concepts to clinical practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus in emergency nursing. Basic knowledge of healthcare regulations and accreditation required. Exhibit professional behavior at all times, works calmly, and responds courteously when under pressure. Able to: speak, read and write legibly in English (Spanish preferred); use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, electronic medical record, electronic event reporting program; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment; perform technical patient care activities; relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and enforcing policies; teach, collaborate; accept direction; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math and statistical functions; manage multiple patient assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch. Licensures and Certifications Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required. Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications issued by the American Heart Association required. National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required within 6 months of hire. Basic Arrhythmia Recognition and Treatment Course required within 6 months of hire. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification issued by the American Heart Association preferred. Trauma Nursing Care Course (TNCC) and Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) preferred.
