Transportation Senior Operations Technician

Overview The Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is seeking a Transportation Senior Operations Technician for the Colchester team of the District Maintenance and Fleet Division. Primary responsibilities include assisting the Supervisor in leading a team in providing safe and efficient movement of people and goods. The Senior Technician will serve as the Crew Leader for day‑to‑day work activities, following the direction of the Supervisor and may act as a supervisor in their absence. Primary duties revolve around winter maintenance including plowing with specialized equipment and treating roads with winter materials. Secondary activities include maintenance and supervisory work on roads, bridges, culverts, and related properties. The incumbent must enforce proper safety practices and assist in training employees accordingly. Strong leadership skills and considerable knowledge of transportation maintenance equipment are required. Full salary range is listed; new hires are typically made at the minimum of the range. Who May Apply The position is open to all state employees and external applicants. Environmental Factors Increased exposure to extreme outdoor weather, overtime during heavy snowfall or emergencies, and travel beyond the normal work schedule. Must be reachable by phone, capable of using tools and equipment, lift materials commonly used in maintenance. Hazards include working on or near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, airborne pathogens, and traffic. Participation in a random drug and alcohol testing program is required. Overtime, especially in winter, is substantial. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent and ≥2 years of transportation maintenance or construction experience, including ≥1 year supervising a work crew and ≥1 season operating a snowplow (with or without wings), and ≥6 months operating medium or heavy equipment such as graders, rollers, or backhoes. OR one (1) year or more as a Transportation Operations Technician III. CDL Application Requirements Any applicant for an operator position must provide detailed employment history for the past 10 years. The application must include a list of names and addresses of previous employers where you were a commercial motor vehicle operator, dates employed, and reason for leaving. Special Requirements Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required. Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement required within the first six months. Must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation. Must complete all VTTC required coursework within one year or be enrolled. Must complete First Aid and CPR certification within one year or be enrolled. Non‑original probationary employees must obtain required CDL license before six months of service.
