DOC Nurse Supervisor - Denver

Position Overview Nurse III Supervisor in Denver, CO. Supervises, guides, and directs professional skilled nursing care for incarcerated offenders in outpatient clinics, infirmaries, or specialized cell house settings. Includes acute care, chronic support, and emergency assessment. May serve as unit or shift supervisor and may be required to work any shift, weekends, holidays, on‑call or call‑back duties. Only Colorado state residents may apply. Responsibilities Documents handwritten or electronic patient records accurately and timely providing comprehensive inmate medical records. Delivers patient education, including demonstrating self‑care techniques, informing about medication side effects and complications, and listening to offender concerns. Provides patient care individualized to offenders’ diagnoses and needs in clinic, infirmary, or specialized cell house settings. Performs routine and emergency physical and emotional assessments of inmates during triage, sick line, and emergency situations using basic nursing skills and protocols. Promotes and is accountable for safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observations and sensitive contraband control, including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control. Responsible for payroll, scheduling, and Performance Management Plans; accounts for shift responsibilities for 8‑16 hours per day; point person for daily operations and decisions; assigns staff, coordinates orientation, assists in hiring, participates in promotions and disciplinary recommendations. Recommends, implements, and monitors compliance with policies and procedures; operates as an on‑call supervisor and arranges for coverage and approves overtime. Minimum Qualifications Current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact. Three (3) years of full‑time experience providing patient care as a RN (part‑time experience prorated). Bachelor’s degree in nursing may substitute for one year of experience; master’s or doctoral degree may substitute for two years. Official transcripts required. Remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure. Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high‑stakes interaction. Preferred Qualifications One year or more of nursing supervisory experience, including affecting pay, status and tenure of subordinates. Nursing experience as an RN in a correctional environment. Physical and Training Requirements Successful completion of all modules of the six‑week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including English reading comprehension and defensive tactics. Physical ability to complete defensive tactics: lift arms above head, kick, stabilize another person, deliver blows, endure impact, swing a baton, rotate body, get down and up on knees, and repeat. Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and assignments. Must be able to see and hear to observe, address, and respond to potential safety breaches. Can seize, hold, control or subdue violent persons. Can walk and climb stairs consistently; able to work outdoors in inclement weather and in concrete floor/wall settings. Willing and able to travel and work various shifts, including rotating schedules. TB screening required at hire. Other Employment Conditions Must be 21 years of age. Must possess valid U.S. work authorization (no H‑1B sponsorship). Must possess a high school diploma or GED. No felony convictions (including specified federal statutes). Valid driver’s license required if agency vehicle use expected. Medical screening and tests (COVID‑19, drug tests) required. Will be required to perform defensive tactics training.
