Job Summary Performs Phlebotomy with minimal guidance. Responsible for accessioning specimens or patient tissue materials for testing, including packaging specimens or tissue materials to be sent out to referring laboratory. Works closely with laboratory staff, medical staff, and external customers and performs customer service functions including telephone etiquette and basic troubleshooting and problem resolution. Key Responsibilities Performs patient check‑in procedure and updates patient information as necessary in the registration system. Places generic manual orders and sends them to Specimen Receiving or the Patient Service Specialist for accessioning. Instructs patients on proper collection of urine, stool, sputum, and saliva specimens and provides appropriate collection supplies. Administers oral solutions for glucose tolerance testing and retrieves blood samples and other specimens. Demonstrates Credo behaviors in all interactions, explaining blood‑draw procedures to patients and assisting patients, co‑workers, and internal customers. Verifies patient identification with two identifiers before and after venipuncture and labels tubes immediately in front of the patient. Maintains specimen integrity using aseptic technique, follows department procedures, and performs venipunctures and capillary sticks according to age‑specific guidelines. Processes specimens for laboratory testing, including centrifuging and aliquoting of blood samples. Packs and stores specimens appropriately for transport following lab test directories. Manages safety checks, supply inventory, and assists with training. Preceptor to students and new hires. Performs other duties as assigned. Technical Capabilities Phlebotomy (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of phlebotomy in practical applications of a difficult nature and can train others. Specimen Collection (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of specimen collection and can train others. Quality Assurance (Novice): Analyzes and evaluates work processes, seeking continual improvement and establishing quality standards. Equipment Maintenance (Novice): Maintains equipment and ensures sufficient parts inventory. Patient Assessment (Intermediate): Conducts patient assessments, delivers results, and trains others. Customer Service (Novice): Influences customers, verifies needs, responds efficiently, and maintains service quality. Core Accountabilities Organizational Impact: Performs routine tasks that may impact team performance with occasional guidance. Problem Solving/Complexity: Uses discretion to solve routine problems. Breadth of Knowledge: Applies knowledge of standards, established processes, and procedures to the role. Team Interaction: Provides guidance to entry‑level co‑workers. Position Qualifications Experience: Minimum 1 year in a related field. Education: High School Diploma or GED.
