Carpenter

Reporting to the Director of Lands and Facilities, the Maintenance Technician/Carpenter is a full-time professional staff position. The Maintenance Technician/Carpenter performs skilled work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of wooden and wood substitute items and structures. Also, performs duties in the general repair and maintenance of buildings and university facilities. Strong customer service skills and working independently with little supervision is needed.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies - High school diploma or GED and one to three years similar experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable experience in one or more of the applicable trades (i.e.: carpentry, machinist, electrician, plumber); or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Ability to work independently, conceptualize project and manage multiple priorities. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, and tools of the carpentry trade. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to plan, lay out, and perform carpentry work of average difficulty. Ability to work from sketches and blue prints. Skill in the care and use of hand and bench tools and equipment of the carpentry trade. Ability to perform plumbing, electrical, and carpentry maintenance and repairs, such as constructing partitions and small out buildings, and installing plumbing pipe and related plumbing fixtures. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to understand and interpret information. Ability to multitask and coordinate multiple projects.

Physical Demands - Stand, stoop, climb, bend, stretch and walk as needed to successfully install, inspect, repair and/or construct. Lift, hold and carry equipment and materials weighing 75 pounds on an occasional basis. Driving.

Duties/Responsibilities - Performs general carpentry work in construction, alteration and repair of wood and wood substitute items and structures such as cabinets, bookcases, drawers, partitions, panels, and building structures. Installs, repairs, and replaces doors, door hardware, and locks. Maintains Lock/Key database. Installs, repairs, and replaces windows and window hardware. Installs special activity floor, floor coverings, floor partitions. Builds shelving, toolboxes, and map and picture frames; repairs office furniture. Hangs pictures or bulletin boards in offices.

Percentage of time - 40

Duties/Responsibilities - Covers tables and desks with various protective coverings. Installs and repairs acoustical ceilings. Hangs vinyl wall covering, and installs door frames. Drives truck to various locations on and off campus. Assists in various general maintenance projects.

Percentage of time - 30

Duties/Responsibilities - Operates equipment such as skill saw, table saw, band saw, drill press, jigsaw, cutting torch, etc. Operates various equipment in general maintenance. Also operates yard equipment such as tractors, backhoe, forklifts. Other duties as assigned. Performs general painting, plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs, such as unstopping clogged sinks, drains, and garbage disposals, resetting circuit breakers. Perform emergency repairs on various types of machinery, including mechanical, electric and hydraulic; identify and replace worn or damaged parts in a timely manner. Use a variety of power and hand tools to perform job functions. Drives trucks to transport materials such as furniture, supplies, or equipment as needed.
