The company supports clients across hazardous material surveys, exposure monitoring, indoor air quality assessments, microbial and moisture intrusion investigations, and building science-related consulting. Our clients include owners and developers, property and facility managers, tenants, insurers, general contractors, specialty contractors, institutional clients, industrial clients, restoration / abatement partners, and residential clients. Position Summary Indoor Science is seeking an Director of Industrial Hygiene to help lead client delivery, billable project execution, staff development, and commercial growth for our Aurora, Illinois-based consulting practice. This is first and foremost a field-facing, billable seller-doer role. The Director is expected to maintain strong utilization by self-performing and leading client projects, while also taking on added leadership responsibilities around quoting, lead conversion, staff mentorship, methodology development, QA/QC, and client development. The right candidate combines senior technical judgment, practical field experience, and a commercial mindset. This person should be comfortable managing projects from first client call through proposal, field work, reporting, recommendations, and follow-up, and should be able to speak credibly with facility managers, property managers, EHS teams, general contractors, restoration / abatement companies, insurers, tenants, owners, and referral partners about IAQ, industrial hygiene, hazardous materials, moisture intrusion, and exposure monitoring needs. Essential Functions & Key Responsibilities Billable Project Delivery and Field ExecutionMaintain strong billable utilization by self-performing, leading, or directly overseeing client projects across IH, IAQ, asbestos, microbial / moisture intrusion, exposure monitoring, and building science service lines.Manage projects from client intake and proposal through field execution, data interpretation, reporting, recommendations, invoicing support, and client follow-up.Conduct or oversee asbestos building inspections, asbestos air sampling, IAQ assessments, microbial / moisture intrusion investigations, occupational exposure monitoring, ventilation-related assessments, and building science evaluations.Develop sampling strategies and investigation plans for RCS, particulates, VOCs, metals, noise, combustion-related concerns, and other occupational or indoor environmental exposures.Interpret laboratory and instrument data, compare results to applicable standards or recognized guidance, and provide clear, defensible recommendations.Prepare and review client-ready deliverables, including technical reports, sketches, remediation protocols, project specifications, bid documents, and closeout documentation.Balance field execution with leadership responsibilities so that coaching, business development, and process work support, rather than replace a billable consulting delivery. Quoting, Inbound Lead Farming, and Sales SupportRespond to and farm qualified inbound leads by clarifying client needs, identifying decision makers, recommending the right service path, and moving opportunities from inquiry to proposal to booked work.Independently scope and quote routine and moderately complex IH / IEQ projects, including asbestos surveys, IAQ assessments, microbial / moisture investigations, exposure monitoring, and building science work.Join sales calls with facility managers, property managers, EHS teams, GC firms, restoration / abatement companies, insurers, owners, and referral partners.Retarget past, dormant, and lapsed clients through practical follow-up, service education, seasonal reminders, project closeout conversations, and cross-selling into adjacent services.Review lead sources, proposal activity, wins / losses, recurring client opportunities, and common objections to improve conversion, pricing, and service-line focus. People Leadership, Methodology Design, and QA/QCMentor junior consultants in field judgment, sampling strategy, documentation, chain-of-custody, client communication, report writing, and project ownership.Develop and refine standard operating procedures, field checklists, report templates, QA/QC review processes, pricing assumptions, and repeatable service packages.Design defensible methodologies for recurring service lines such as asbestos surveys, IAQ investigations, microbial / moisture assessments, exposure monitoring, clearance testing, and building science evaluations.Review selected proposals, scopes, sampling plans, reports, and recommendations to improve consistency, defensibility, readability, and commercial practicality.Support onboarding, training, and continuous improvement around safety, equipment care, client interaction, documentation, utilization, and report quality. Marketing Alignment and Market VisibilityWork with leadership and the marketing agency so the website, SEO content, service pages, case studies, and thought-leadership materials accurately reflect Indoor Science capabilities and client pain points.Translate technical services into practical market-facing language for facility managers, property managers, EHS leaders, contractors, insurers, and restoration / abatement partners.Identify service-line keywords, FAQs, recurring client questions, seasonal demand drivers, and content topics that can generate more qualified inbound opportunities. Required Qualifications Licenses, Certifications & RegistrationsIllinois Asbestos Building Inspector license required.Illinois Asbestos Air Sampling Professional license required, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.Illinois Lead Risk Assessor and/or Illinois Lead Inspector license required; Lead Risk Assessor strongly preferred.Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle required. Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesMinimum 10+ years of relevant consulting experience in IH, IAQ, asbestos, microbial / moisture intrusion, occupational exposure monitoring, hazardous materials, EHS, or building science along with formal people-management.Demonstrated ability to maintain strong billable utilization while managing field work, client communication, sampling strategy, chain-of-custody documentation, reporting, and project follow-up.Ability to independently scope, price, propose, manage, and close consulting projects.Experience responding to client inquiries, qualifying needs, developing proposals, and following up to convert opportunities into work.Experience mentoring junior staff, reviewing technical deliverables, or improving field / reporting standards.Strong command of sampling strategy, data interpretation, client-ready reporting, and practical corrective-action recommendations.Experience with IAQ, microbial / moisture intrusion, asbestos, occupational exposure monitoring, and several of the following: RCS, VOCs, particulates, metals, noise, ventilation / HVAC, combustion-related concerns, or building envelope assessments.Working knowledge of OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, IDPH, ASHRAE, IICRC, and other standards or guidance relevant to IH / IEQ consulting.Strong professional presence, emotional intelligence, and ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.Physically able to perform field assessments as needed.Bachelors Degree preferred. Preferred QualificationsCIH, PE, CSP, CHMM, CIEC, CMC, or similar professional credential preferred; CIH required within six months of onboarding.Illinois Radon Measurement Professional or Radon Measurement Technician license preferred.Illinois Asbestos Project Designer, Project Manager, or Management Planner license preferred where relevant to project scope.Existing relationships with facility managers, property managers, EHS leaders, GC firms, restoration / abatement contractors, insurers, owners, schools, healthcare systems, or industrial clients.Experience with CRM discipline, lead follow-up, proposal tracking, client reactivation, account management, or seller-doer consulting models.Experience with building envelope assessments, asbestos abatement specifications, remediation scopes, contractor bid documents, HVAC / ventilation assessments, or industrial ventilation evaluations.Experience working with marketing teams or agencies on service positioning, SEO content, website service pages, case studies, client education, or technical thought leadership.
