Assistant City Traffic Engineer

The City of Beaverton is seeking an Assistant City Traffic Engineer (ACTE) who will play a key role in shaping the future of traffic and transportation in the city.

This position is in the Public Works Transportation Engineering Division and will focus on traffic design and analysis to help move forward the City Council’s priority of Safe Streets. The ACTE will be involved with every step of traffic engineering in the city—from concept development to implementation, including interacting with the Beaverton Traffic Commission and the Beaverton Planning Commission.

The ACTE’s day-to-day involves working with both the Community Development Department and Public Works Operations to ensure that traffic flows safely and smoothly throughout the city. The role includes taking part in transportation planning projects including updating the City’s Transportation System Plan (TSP) and implementing the new Complete Streets policy. Additionally, the position supports and/or leads capital improvement projects and reviews site development plans and land use applications. This position will supervise and guide transportation staff, including Engineering Technicians and Project Engineers.

This is a full-time, exempt, Management 2 (M2) position. There is one vacancy.

• Manage and/or support transportation projects, including in-house and consultant-designed projects. 
• Inspect projects to ensure compliance with codes, regulations, and standards.
• Evaluate proposed residential, commercial, and industrial developments for traffic impacts and determine mitigations for safety and operational issues.
• Investigate and respond to traffic and safety concerns reported by residents and other agencies. 
• Maintain and update city traffic standards, including standard drawings, special provisions, and code revisions.
• Contribute to long-range transportation planning and policy development.
• Provide up-to-date subject matter expertise in traffic engineering, including participation in professional groups; provide input on proposed regulations.
• Present technical information to city leadership, neighborhoods and partner agencies.
• Supervise staff, scheduling, assigning and reviewing work.
• Act as City Transportation Engineer in their absence.

Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field, and
• Eight years of experience in professional traffic engineering, including
• Three years in a supervisory, management, or lead role; or 
• An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position. 

Licensing and special requirements

• Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the city’s driving standards. 
• Registration as a civil engineer (PE) in the State of Oregon or the ability to obtain licensure within six months of hire. 
• Ability to pass reference checks and education verification, and satisfy the requirements of a background check.

Salary range : $9,731.21 - $13,040.86 monthly

Starting pay within the posted range is based on a review of your related work experience, as required by the Oregon Equal Pay Act. We compare the experience shown in your application materials with the qualifications for the position. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will start at step one. Applicants whose work history clearly demonstrates additional directly related experience may be placed at a higher step within the range.
