Underwriter/Senior Underwriter: Life Sciences

Role Overview The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite new life sciences business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines, participating in special projects that impact the business. Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges, and provide coaching to others. Regular travel across the Northeast region is expected to develop broker relationships and drive new business opportunities. Responsibilities Review, analyze, accept, or decline life sciences risks to ensure profitability for Markel. Communicate with underwriting management on individual accounts, current and proposed producers, and make recommendations concerning operations, systems and procedures. Underwrite and select new business that generates underwriting profit. Review submissions and identify exposure and risk from the information provided. Underwrite renewal business and review terms, conditions and pricing. Monitor producers for profitability and production. Monitor outcomes of the overall book of business assigned and recommend corrective actions as necessary. Drive new business production by actively marketing to wholesale broker partners, identifying high‑potential distribution relationships, and executing outreach strategies aligned with team appetite and growth goals. Participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required. Cross‑sell opportunities with other Markel divisions through promotion of Markel’s products and services. Coordinate with other Markel platforms on common accounts. Manage broker relationships within the wholesale channel. Travel within the Northeast region marketing to brokers. Qualifications Minimum 3 years of current experience underwriting profitable life sciences or related business. Bachelor’s degree and industry designations (proven, outstanding experience can substitute for education). Proven outstanding reputation with wholesale distribution. Knowledge of pricing accounts using loss rating and actuarial modeling tools/techniques. Willingness to frequently travel across the Northeast region for broker visits, industry events and in‑person relationship development to drive new life sciences business. Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment. Proven excellent customer service skills. Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflecting progression of positions of increasing responsibility. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Superb MS Office and underwriting system skills. Strong analytical and organizational skills. Team player that enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment. Compensation & Benefits National average salary ranges: Underwriter $74,320 - $102,190 per year with a 20% bonus potential; Senior Underwriter $92,880 - $127,710 per year with a 25% bonus potential.
