Summary

You will serve as a Carpenter in the Production Division, Public Works Department Portsmouth VA of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC.

Duties

Help

• You will construct, install, repair and modify wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness.
• You will set up and operate a wide variety of wood working machines and tools, such as routers, band and scroll saws, and drill presses.
• You will interpret complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes; and measure and layout footings for structural foundations.
• You will produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance.
• You will assemble items with a variety of joining techniques to include miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon, and may also use glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces and veneers.

• You may at any time be reassigned to a similar position at any site or workstation within the commuting area.
• You may be considered Essential and be required to report for duty or held in duty status to provide support before, during and/or after special emergency situations.
• You may be required to carry a duty cell phone and duty pager. You must remain available to respond on site to after-hour emergencies within two hours.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Constructing and repairing wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close fit and structural soundness such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, and interior and exterior trim; 2) Interpreting drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine the layout and work sequences and types of lumber or special related materials needed; and 3) Operating power and hand tools and other woodworking equipment such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shavers, tenoners, sanders, routers, combustion type saws, drill presses and table saws. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
