Asst. Director of Nursing

Description Full-Time Monday-Friday (and as needed)

JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director of Nursing is a registered professional nurse, who is primarily concerned with the organization and administration of nursing service as a whole. Develops and maintains nursing services objectives and standards of nursing service practice, develops service policies and procedures and writes job descriptions for nursing service personnel. Organizes, develops, and directs nursing administration and patient care. Orients, instructs, and supervises personnel and functions. Regularly inspects facility and nursing practices for compliance with federal, state, and local standards and regulations. The Assistant Director is responsible to the Director of Nursing. Responsible for planning and implementation of resident care for the nursing home residents; Provides direct supervision of licensed and non- licensed nursing staff; Assist with provision of education to nursing home staff; Assist with facilitation quality improvement activities throughout the nursing home; Acts as resource person to NH administrative team, department managers and medical staff; Assists with safety and risk management issues; Assists with oversight responsibility for all regulatory body surveys.

EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and holds current licensure in the state of GA as a registered professional nurse. An Associate Degree in Nursing or equivalent, BSN preferred. Experience as staff nurse and manager. Current BCLS Certification

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with the mission and vision of the organization. Performs other duties as required and completes all job functions as per departmental policies and procedures. Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility (i.e., self-education, attends ongoing educational programs). Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services and requirements and competency evaluations on time. Wears protective clothing and equipment as appropriate.

GENERAL SKILLS:

Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred. Strong written and verbal skills. Basic Computer Skills

WORKING CONDITIONS:

General environment: Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned area, with moderate noise levels. May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights. May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids, or infectious organisms. May be required to change from one task to another or different nature without loss of efficiency or composure. Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. May be scheduled as needed including overtime.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & DEMANDS:

Have near normal hearing: Hear alarms/telephone/normal speaking voice. Have near normal vision: Clarity of vision (both near and far), ability to distinguish colors. Have good manual dexterity. Have good eye-hand foot coordination. Ability to perform repetitive tasks/motion. Continuously within shift (67-100%): Standing, Walking. Frequently within shift (34-66%): Bending/Stooping, Pushing/Pulling, Lift/carry up to 20lbs, Lift/carry greater than 20 lbs. with assistance. Occasionally within shift (1-33%): Sitting, Climbing, Twist at waist, Lift/Carry greater than 50 lbs. with assistance, Reaching above shoulder.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:

Directs nursing care on units. Assesses resident status continually, initiates nursing intervention, institutes plan of care, evaluate outcomes. Keeps physicians, family and legal representatives apprised of residents’ condition as needed. Assures quality care is given on 24- hour basis. Supervises and evaluates personnel assigned to the units. Continuously provides quality care to all residents. Treats all resident with dignity and respect. Knows, follows and maintains Residents Rights. Maintains a working knowledge and follows Restorative Nursing Principles and Practices. Assists in creating an atmosphere of independence. Knows and follows resident care plan goals and approaches. Supervises Orientation of new personnel. Monitors new employee performance. Provides information to appropriate care givers. Coordinates care with other interdisciplinary departments. Ensures completion of all documentation; nursing progress notes, assessments, care plans, flow sheets, medication, treatment records. Monitors narcotic records, physician orders, and ensures implementation of new physician orders. Assures documentation reflects actual care given and is in compliance with all guidelines. Ensures that administration of treatments and special procedures as prescribed by a physician such as dressing changes, administration of oxygen, administration of respiratory treatments, trach care, colostomy care, maintenance of hyperalimentation lines, monitoring of IV lines, insertion and maintenance of indwelling foley catheters, nasogastric and gastrostomy tubes are performed by competent staff. Monitors outcomes following these procedures through audits and rounds Interprets and carries out all physician orders when necessary. Assist physician during his rounds and examination or treatment of residents as necessary. Initiates and directs administration of emergency care to resident as it arises. Interacts with residents for the promotion of optimum physical, psychological and spiritual well-being. Assist in resident and family education. On call 24/7 at least one week at a time for any issues or problems that arise after working hours in the Nursing Home. Communicates resident/unit concerns, happenings, (acute illness, death, accidents, emergencies) to DON and/or Administrator. Assist in Nursing Homes preparation for State and Federal Surveys. Follows all safety, security, infection control, universal precautions and hazardous material policies and procedures. Supervises and performs all tasks to assure optimum safety of residents, staff, visitors and nursing home property. Supervises and ensures implementation and follow-up of nursing home programs and policies related to effective resident care (i.e., safety program preventative skin and wound care and wound care program. Psychotropic medication program, restorative nursing program, psycho-social program and rehabilitation programs. Maintains active participation in Care Planning process and attends Care Plan Conferences. Assist MDS Coordinator with implementation and follow-up of care plan goals and approaches as determined by interdisciplinary care plan team.

Attempts to end conversations and other interactions in a positive manner; leaves others with a good impression of the Hospital Authority of Miller County and its employees. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. Communicates the mission statement of the organization.
